2008, Unique Edition Resin fiberglass chrome effect with protective cap plexiglas with LED 54 3/10 × 12 1/5 × 7 9/10 in - 138 × 31 × 20 cm The artwork is signed by the Artist , carved with edition number and date under the piece The artwork come accompanied with a formal Certificate of Authenticity issued by the studio of the Artist and signed by the Artist serie "Chrome Chronicles : The Quadrant Resilience" The genesis of Hiro Ando’s inspiration for the Pentalogy Sumowarriors within the expanding realm of the Neko Sculptural Symphony emerges from a renewed dialogue between ritual heritage and contemporary expression—a dialogue rooted in cultural reverence and animated by Ando’s fascination with the symbolic magnitude of the sumo figure. At the core of this pentalogy stands Ando’s long-held contemplation of the sumotori, guardians of discipline, ceremony, and spiritual presence within Japanese tradition. Yet in this new chapter, Ando does not merely depict the sumo as a physical titan; he reimagines it as a mythic archetype—a vessel for exploring resilience, serenity, and the silent poetry of embodied strength. The shift from feline guardians to monumental sumo silhouettes marks a bold expansion of Ando’s sculptural lexicon. Where earlier works celebrated agility and mystique, the Pentalogy Sumowarriors embraces gravity, rootedness, and ritual stance. Surprisingly, this does not diminish nuance; the sumo form, in its stillness, amplifies introspection and ceremonial calm. Each figure carries the echo of sandaled footsteps upon the dohyo, the resonance of ancient rites, the disciplined breath before a clash. Color becomes the structural axis of this ensemble. Each vivid hue—orange, yellow, white, blue, and green—appears not only as pigment but as spiritual attribute embodied in sculptural mass. The vivid orange radiates determination, fierce energy, and the forward motion of the warrior’s will. The luminous yellow shines with clarity, wisdom, and the ceremonial brilliance that precedes ritual action. The pure white evokes openness, renewal, and the meditative void from which all gestures of strength originate. The deep blue resonates with introspection, inner stability, and the quiet power of ancestral memory. The emerald green embodies balance, adaptability, and the natural resilience of living systems. Together, these five chromatic beings form a pentagonal rite of presence, a sculptural symphony where emotional resonance and physical monumentality converge. Each Sumowarrior stands complete in its individuality, yet their full meaning unfolds only in unity—as a constellation of ritual identities arranged in harmonic tension. The choice to envelop each figure in intense monochromatic pigments reaffirms Ando’s pursuit of a sculptural language that transcends literal representation. The matte surfaces, reminiscent of ceremonial fabrics and ritual texture, transform the bodies into chromatic monoliths—contemporary relics whose presence bridges ancient gravitas and modern abstraction. Within the conceptual frame of the Pentalogy, preservation and enclosure take on the quality of ritual space. Should the sumos be presented within a transparent protective capsule, the enclosure becomes not a mere safeguard but a sanctum—an arena of contemplation where viewers approach the figures as if entering a sacred threshold. The glass veil enhances intimacy rather than distance, allowing each color-spirit to unfold with quiet force. Ultimately, Hiro Ando’s Pentalogy Sumowarriors becomes a celebration of multiplicity—of bodies, pigments, and ceremonial postures. It extends the narrative threads of Claws of Legends into a new mythological register, where ancestral fortitude meets chromatic expression. Through this quintet of radiant guardians, Ando invites viewers into an evolving mythology of resilience, ritual, and presence—where strength is not only displayed, but deeply felt, within the timeless architecture of form and color.
