About the Item

Jenny Day creates intricate sculptures of foods that stir memories of personal and community events. Whether a summer party, homemade dinner, or crawfish boil, these gatherings remind us of the significant occasions that have shaped our values through sharing these meals with others. The pieces are both metaphorical and solid, illusionary and real. One can feel the weight of the medium, glazed stoneware, in their heft. Day fires the raw materials multiple times, shrinking and strengthening them, while deeply embedding the glazes and paint that provide rich colors to the individual pieces. Her crawfish boil includes all of the expected fixings: curled pink and red crawfish, whole white garlic bulbs, bright yellow lemon slices, and corn on the cob, each kernel swelling with boiled-in flavor. There are also oysters on a bed of rock salt, and a platter of mussels. Memories of summer parties are evoked by baked beans, a rib platter dripping with barbeque sauce and surrounded by pickles, muffaletta and triple decker sandwiches, a fried chicken and biscuit plate, and, of course, bright red watermelon on the rind. Baked brown dinner rolls dripping with butter, bright green and red pimento stuffed olives, and penne in a cream sauce round out the feast. More experimental tastes can enjoy the shrimp and noodle stir fry or whole crab plate with okra. For dessert is king cake, complete with a pink baby, and macarons topped with a dollop of whipped cream. Jenny Day’s small ceramics are brightly colored tactile reminders of foods and experiences that make up our communal identities. Each tantalizing piece evokes memories of meals and shared company that have shaped our lives.
