Kenzie Wells
STORM - Purple nebulous oil painting on canvas - Extra-terrestrial

2018

About the Item

This piece by Kenzie Wells was made for an exhibit titled "Chroma Complex." It is an oil painting of purple clouds that have an extra-terrestrial, sci-fi feel. Bright pinks and purples like this could only be found in the nebulas of outer space. Artist Statement: Chroma Complex, a compilation of paintings, video, photography and installation, is a concept that led to a show at the Lionel Rombach Gallery in Tucson, AZ in 2018. The work embodies the visually deceptive qualities of color within two-dimensional spaces. Various colorful planes are paired with reflective surfaces, producing images that continuously shift and merge as the viewer moves through the gallery. Through painted walls, shadows, and reflections the work addresses the space beyond its edges, highlighting its physical presence. By synchronizing movement and perspective, the work emphasizes the experiential and ephemeral nature of color within our surroundings.

  • MIDNIGHT IN EDEN - Orange, Blue, Brown Adam and Eve in Surreal Garden at Night
    By Constantin Werner
    Located in Signal Mountain, TN
This painting is Werner's interpretation of The Garden of Eden at nighttime, as he imagines it becomes a hellscape after dark. Animals lurk in the darkness behind an emaciated Adam and Eve, the red eyes of a bull-headed dragon pierce through the darkness. "This was my idea: how about if the the Garden Eden was only a peaceful place during the daytime? Once night falls, dark and cruel animals appear, including bats and giant rodents, ruled by the Snake King (here a giant dragon with a male and a female head). Those frightening creatures represent the suppressed, destructive libido of Adam and Eve (painted upside down from each other to show that they are opposites.) Innocent, they only dream about sin and their dark, unrecognized desires." -Constantin Werner
