This is a magnificent example of this early Cape Dorset artist's work. Flawless original condition.
Some of the finest carvings to come from the north were created in Cape Dorset. A stone excellent for carving, in beautiful shades of green was discovered near Markham Bay at the south Baffin Island coastline in 1954. The master carvers from this region, including Kiawak crafted works with great detail and finish.
“When I carve... I will start from the head. I try to put down a lot of details in the carvings that I do. Sometimes I carve from my imagination and sometimes I carve what I have seen in the past.”
Kiawak Ashoona was the son of graphic artist Pitseolak and sibling of carvers, Kaka and Koomwartok. Kiawak had noted that he enjoyed finishing his work with fine detail. He preferred to carve in seclusion so he could take his time to develop the work.

Victor Salmones (1937-1989) was the most widely known sculptor living and working in Mexico during his lifetime. His sculptures won him universal acclaim and are held in the collections of museums, corporations, cities, universities and private collectors in some 30 countries. During his career, he was highly sought after and increasingly involved in the execution of commissions for major public works around the world.
Salmones developed his love and talent for creating sculpture by working with clay in high school. He attended the Instituto de Bellas Artes (Mexican National Institute of Fine Arts), where he was an apprentice to the Bauhaus master, Otto Hoffman. He was trained to use the exacting, age-old lost wax method of casting and worked principally in bronze. Hoffman's encouragement led to the opening of Victor's own sculpture workshop in Cuernavaca in 1966.
In 1967, Salmones’ fluid bronze “Adam” won first prize at the Biennale Exposition of the National Museum of Modern Art. His work continued to win the highest critical acclaim at subsequent Biennale expositions, and in 1971, over hundreds of entries, his life-size bronze Narcissus...

Known as Peruvian alabaster for its translucency and workability, Piedra de Huamanga is a highly prized material from the province of Ayacucho in Peru. In the 17th and 18th centuries, local craftsman in the town of Huamanga began to specialize in the production of small-scale, polychrome religious sculptures made from this distinctive stone. Huamanga sculptures are among the most accomplished examples of carving from the Spanish Americas, where polychrome wood sculpture was a far more common sculptural medium. These works, which were created as independent sculptures or as sculptural groups—such as our three Magi—were intended for ecclesiastical as well as domestics settings.
