About the Item

Lombard school of the XVIII - XIX centuries Last dinner Bas-relief with 'pastille' technique 35 x 63 cm. Framed 45 x 74 cm. The 'pastiglia' plates had a huge diffusion especially starting from the Renaissance, around the first decades of the sixteenth century and especially in northern Italy, created to decorate boxes or caskets: the figures were printed with iron matrices that released the negative in pad, then shaped by hand or with the help of special chisels. The Pastiglia was a material widely used both for the bas-relief decoration on boxes and frames and for defining the relief details of the paintings on wood. It was a fine stucco made of Bologna plaster, vegetable flour, rabbit glue, and cooked linseed oil. But in reality, the most modern analyzes indicate that each shop had a list of 'secret' ingredients that could be quite variable depending on the area and the time of production: in addition to wheat or rice flour, white lead, egg and also perfumed substances such as musk and amber. Our copy, made in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth centuries, reproduces the Last Supper frescoed by Leonardo for the refectory of Santa Maria Delle Grazie in Milan with a wealth of bas-relief details. In this case, the pad was created to perfectly recreate the effect of the wood. The panel is in good condition. Restorations in some portions of the upper edge. Pleasant wear of the surface layer, which softens its relief and certifies its age. Certificate of photographic authenticity according to the law.
