About the Item
Matt Mitros was born in Philadelphia, PA. Upon completing his BFA at Penn State University, he was an Artist-In-Residence at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts as well as the Archie Bray Foundation. Mitros completed a post-baccalaureate from the University of Illinois and holds an MFA from the University of Washington. He has taught ceramics and sculpture at the University of Washington, South Seattle Community College, Lakeside Upper School, Kennesaw State University, The University of Alabama, and currently is an Assistant Professor at Southern Illinois University. In 2014 Mitros was a Short-Term Artist-In-Residence at Red Lodge Clay Center and returned there again in 2017.

Matt Mitros
Matt Mitros is an American contemporary artist, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Upon completing his BFA course at Penn State University, he became an Artist-In-Residence at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts, as well as the Archie Bray Foundation. Mitros completed a post-baccalaureate program from the University of Illinois and holds an MFA degree from the University of Washington. He has taught ceramics and sculpture at the University of Washington, South Seattle Community College, Lakeside Upper School, Kennesaw State University, University of Alabama and currently, is an Assistant Professor at Southern Illinois University. In 2014, Mitros was a short-term Artist-In-Residence at Red Lodge Clay Center and returned there again, in 2017. In 2008, he was an Artist Trust GAP (Grant for Artist Projects) recipient, funded by the City of Seattle. His work has been featured in Art in America, Art LTD, Clay Times, Ceramics Monthly and City Arts Magazine, as well as the book, 500 Figures in Clay. He has exhibited his work throughout North America and Europe. Mitros's work is in the permanent public collections of the National Museum of Slovenia, Bemidji State University, Spartanburg Art Museum, de Young Museum, The Hudgens Center for the Arts, FSU Museum of Fine Art and others.

“I approach making with a childlike spirit of experimentation and exploration. My work stems from a love of the wood fired ceramic surface, particularly how it evokes many beautiful natural phenomena. Like imagining the way wind gathers and deposits leaves on a landscape according to changes in topography, I anticipate the manner in which ash will collect differently on the convex and concave surfaces of my gestural forms. These functional pots are developed as a place for this surface to exist and to be enjoyed as a part of our daily life.”—Haas

Bodil Manz (Danish, b. 1943) is a ceramicist known for her predominant use of ultra-thin, translucent eggshell porcelain to create distinctive cylindrical forms, anchored by bold, geometric abstractions in a style evocative of Russian Suprematism. Much in the way Morandi approached a still life or Albers the square, her engagement with the cylinder form ad infinitum is study in the master’s ability to extract sublime nuance from the seemingly quotidien. In her own words – “Focusing and concentrating on a single object such as a sphere, a square, a cylinder, a cup, fundamentally something quite ordinary, the stuff of everyday life, [seems] indeed almost banal. But during the process we discovered fresh aspects, and suddenly ‘the ordinary’ became a new experience.
