CORNELIO PALMERINI
Tuscan figurative wood sculpture twentieth century male portrait

ante 1927

About the Item

Cornelio Palmerini, born in the heart of Versilia, was a sculptor trained between Tuscany (Pietrasanta, Carrara and Florence) and Rome, the city where he went in 1913 to the studio of his fellow countryman Arturo Dazzi; the relationship between the two continued, so much so that thirteen years later he called him to collaborate on the creation of the "Victory Monument" in Bolzano. He devoted himself to learning about the masters of the past but also to the avant-garde-being particularly impressed by the Futurists-drawing parallels between them and his personal world, developing an artistic language that combined mastery with a deep sense of hieraticism and humanity. Indeed, his works often reflected themes related to nature, spirituality and the human condition, communicating complex emotions through simple and elegant forms. Also fully within Palmerini's aesthetic and sensibility is La bardella, which, as expressed by art historian Lodovico Gierut, is characterized by "full dynamic, intense, great shaping and setting." It belongs to the final phase of the life of this artist, who died prematurely, and was first exhibited in 1927 at the XCIII Exhibition of the Society of Amateurs and Connoisseurs of Fine Arts in Rome and, in the same year, at the II International Exhibition in Rijeka. It depicts a naked boy, standing with his arms folded over his head to echo what is the title, which is a traditional Tuscan dialect term for a kind of saddle. The work is signed at the base and the date is also present, although not clearly legible.
