About the Item

Emilio Zocchi (Florence, 5 March 1835 – Florence, 10 January 1913) was an Italian sculptor and a Professor at the academy of fine arts in Florence. Emilio learned his first steps in sculpture at the age of 8 from his uncle that was a marble master ; then his teachers were Girolamo Torrini, Aristodemo Costoli and Giovanni Dupré. The original dancing satyr is a famous sculpture displayed at the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence sculpture depicts a satyr caught while performing a dance step, beating time with a foot castanet (kroupezeion in Greek). Having belonged to the collection of the Roman prelate Eurialo Silvestri after a brief stay at Villa Giulia, the marble was then purchased by the Medici family at the end of the 16th century and brought to Florence at the beginning of the 17th century. In the last years of that century it finally entered the Tribuna to be counted among the most famous sculptures in the grand ducal collection. During the imperial age the group was replicated several times to be used as decoration of suburban villas and luxury residences, even if it has also been found in thermal areas Emilio Zocchi was also the author of the bas-relief Romulus and Remus found by the she-wolf dates back to 1854. His monumental statue Alcibiades is dated around 1861 and then placed in Sansepolcro; in the 1860s he was the author of a lunette depicting the Vision of Constantine for the facade of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence. Also around 1861 he sculpted Michelangelo as a boy sculpting the Faun, now kept in the Allegory room of the Palatine Gallery in Palazzo Pitti . In 1890 he created an equestrian monument to Vittorio Emanuele II of Italy, originally located in Piazza della Repubblica and in 1932 moved to Piazza Vittorio Veneto alle Cascine. The Grand Tour was the principally 17th- to early 19th-century custom of a traditional trip through Europe, with Italy as a key destination, undertaken by upper-class young European men of sufficient means and rank (typically accompanied by a tutor or family member) when they had come of age (about 21 years old). The primary value of the Grand Tour lay in its exposure to the cultural legacy of classical antiquity and the Renaissance, and to the aristocratic and fashionably polite society of the European continent. It also provided the only opportunity to view specific works of art, and possibly the only chance to hear certain music. The Grand Tour offered a liberal education, and the opportunity to acquire things otherwise unavailable, lending an air of accomplishment and prestige to the traveller. Grand Tourists would return with crates full of books, works of art, scientific instruments, and cultural artefacts – from snuff boxes and paperweights to altars, fountains, and statuary – to be displayed in libraries, cabinets, gardens, drawing rooms, and galleries built for that purpose.
