About the Item
Late 19th-century bronze figure derived from a work by Jean Michel-Angel Pollet-a Palermo artist of French parents who was a pupil of Bertel Thorvaldsen and Peter Tenerani - titled "The Hour of Night."
This subject was first presented, in plaster, at the 1848 Paris Salon and was so successful that a second version in marble (now Musée national du château du Compiègne) was resubmitted in 1850 and a third in bronze at the 1855 Exposition Universelle.
It depicts a maiden with a star on her forehead and flowers in her hair in an elongated pose with her arms behind her head and her eyes closed, as if immortalized in the act of stretching before falling asleep. A veil wraps around her legs, leaving her upper body exposed. It differs from the original version in size and in the absence of the two winged putti at the feet.
