Tuscan Neoclassical Mythological Figurative objet d'art alabaster bronze

About the Item

Alabaster temple with Corinthian capitals decorated with swans and flower ornaments. At the centre, a bronze statue representing the Queen Omphale dressed with the Nemean Lion skin and the club, attributes of the demigod hero Hercules, of whom she was the lover. Due to the exquisite quality of the carving, the material and the provenance (a relevant collection in Florence), it can be ascribe to the production of the workshop of Giovanni Insom, an artist from the Trentino Region (North East of Italy) specialized in the alabaster manufacturing. He was mostly active in Florence in the first half of the 19th century, under the Napoleonic Dominion and the return of House of Hapsburg-Lorraine, where his atelier became the most requested for this kind of object art and it was a mandatory destination for the foreigners getting to Tuscany for the Grand Tour and for the local aristocracy.
