About the Item
Wonderful and one of a kind nude sculpture by Noche Crist (1909-2004). Sculpture is made from polyester resin. Catalogue of a postumous retrospective in 2008 at the American University Museum Katzen Arts Center in Washington D.C. is included. Paintings by Noche Crist were recently featured in the inaugural exhibition at the Romanian Cultural Institute in NYC. Crist's work is in the permanent collection of the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, the Smithsonian, and the Art Museum of Craiova in Romania.
The Romanian born, self-taught artist is known for her acrylic paintings on wooden panels and shaped transparent polyester resin sculptures that create images reminiscent of her childhood at her family's country estate outside Bucharest. Noche Crist was well known not only for her paintings and sculptures but also her storytelling and entertaining that helped turn her into a legendary figure in the Washington D.C. art scene. In her paintings and sculptures she favored the bodies of bare-breasted woman often with animal heads. Her works were widely collected including by Olga Hirschhorn, a leading art collector in Washington D.C. who bought two sets of Noche Crist candlesticks in the shape of nude female torsos.

At the age of eighteen, she left Rio de Janeiro and moved to Paris to study sculpture at l’Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, receiving her Diploma there in 1979 under the direction of Claude Viseux, Etienne Martin, and Cesar. During that time she worked as an apprentice at the Fonderie de France where she learned bronze technique and she also attended etching courses at l’Ecole de Montparnasse.
