About the Item

Late 19th century French finely carved white Carrara marble figure of Bathing Venus . The marble base is not included in the price. AFTER CHRISTOPHE-GABRIEL ALLEGRAIN (FRENCH, 1710-1795): A 19TH CENTURY MARBLE FIGURE OF VENUS SORTANT DU BAIN the nude maiden holding her falling drapery with her left hand, about to dry herself, her hair arranged in an elaborate coiffure with entwined plaits, on a naturalistic base carved with rocks and reeds. Christophe-Gabriel Allegrain (French, 1710-1795) was a sculptor famed and celebrated for his exceptional creations in a blend of the Neoclassical and Rococo styles. Working from the mid-18th Century in France, he secured the important patronage of King Louis XV who commissioned his most famous work 'Venus after the Bath', also known as 'La Baigneuse', after which this fine sculpture was made. The original sculpture was commissioned by King Louis XV in 1755 and was later exhibited at the Salon of 1767, where it was highly praised for combining the Neoclassical style of sculpture with light, Rococo touches. King Louis XV gave the sculpture to his mistress, Madame du Barry, in 1772, and it became part of the Louvre collection in the early 19th Century, where it can now be viewed. 'Venus after the Bath' has been a popular subject across the arts since antiquity, and this fine sculpture depicts the full-length nude female figure of Venus, Roman goddess of love, towelling her legs with a furled cloth as she rests one foot on a small rock. The sculpture stands on a circular yellow marble base.

Unique Carrara white marble finely carved sculpture of Orpheus , Mythological personification of the eternal love and art. Henry Dasson French 1825 - 1896 Orpheus white marble, on a gilt bronze base 75.5cm., 29 3/4 in. overall The renowned Parisian maker of gilt-bronze mounted furniture, Henry Dasson, began his career as a bronze sculptor. Occasionally marbles with his signature have appeared on the art market. It is likely that these were made in his workshop at 106, rue Vielle du Temple, which specialised in the production of bronze artifacts and clocks. Dasson's success was such that he was made a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in 1883 and was awarded the Grand Prix Artistique at the Paris 1889 Exposition Universelle. In the Greek myth Orpheus, son of the muse Calliope and Apollo – or of the king of Thrace, Eagro – is the poet par excellence, the personification of song. With his lyre and his words he manages to seduce men, animals of all species and even trees, stones and the sea. With the strength of his verses he moves, softens, excites, touches the soul and the fibers of those who have the opportunity to listen to him. Orpheus falls in love with the nymph Eurydice and marries her. Yet the fate of the two lovers...
