Mark Beard
Statue of Athlete: Large Academic Style Bronze Figurative Sculpture of Nude Male

About the Item

modern figurative bronze sculpture of a nude athlete 8.5 feet tall and measures 36 inches at the widest point bottom base measures 31.5 x 17.5 inches This sculpture is offered by Carrie Haddad Gallery, located in Hudson, NY. This figurative bronze sculpture is one of the large works Mark Beard was commissioned to produce for the Abercrombie and Fitch stores in New York, Paris, Tokyo and Milan. The bronze sculptures were made to compliment the artist's large painted murals of sporting young men which were showcased at each flagship venue. This academic style sculpture of an athletic male nude stands 8.5 feet tall and is 36 inches at it's widest point. The bottom base measures 31.5 x 17.5 inches. The artist captures the figure's pristine musculature with a graceful contrapposto stance, where both hands rest gently on the hip. Toned muscle is given realistic shadow and depth through the artist's mastery of bronze sculpting. Mark Beard created this work under his fictitious artistic persona, Bruce Sargeant. Beard is the living artist who paints under the pseudonym BRUCE SARGEANT as he brands a style of painting that merges the traditional, academic portraiture of John Singer Sargeant and the evocative fashion photography of Bruce Weber, know best for his work on Calvin Klein advertising campaigns in the 1980s and 90s. About the artist: Mark Beard is perhaps the most literal example of an artist pulled in so many different directions that he chose to “invent” six different personae in which to channel his overflowing energy and need for expression. Each painting style is radically different from the next, so it remains entirely believable that the work could stem from six completely different people of different time periods and different schools of thought. With a background in set design, Beard has always been one who could conjure total magic with anything available. For this exhibit, he returns as the beloved 20th century painter from England, Bruce Sargeant, featuring a parade of Arcadian scenes suggesting afternoons of young men sporting in the countryside, rowing, bicycling, hunting or wrestling. Clean shaven, well manicured youths pose casually, indulging every opportunity to display a titillating flex of stone-like musculature. Like modern Greek statues, Beard paints these prestigious figures oftentimes in pairs of twos and threes in a lazy state of beautiful passivity. Mark Beard keeps himself fresh with challenge, undertaking ambitious commissions and committing to weekly sketch sessions with live models in his Manhattan studio. The result of this dedicated practice is a stunning array of graphite and conte crayon drawings on Arches paper. Mark Beard has exhibited with Carrie Haddad Gallery for nearly twenty years and there has never been a dull moment. Mark Beard, born in 1956 in Salt Lake city, now lives in New York City. His works are in museum collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City; the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; and the Harvard, Yale, and Princeton University Art Museums; among many others. We would not be the least bit surprised to see new ‘personas’ emerge in the coming years. Carrie Haddad Gallery was established in 1991 as the first fine art gallery in Hudson, NY. We host 7 exhibits a year and represent established mid-career artists, as well as emerging talent, working in painting, mixed media, photography and sculpture.

  • Monumental Classical Italian Venus de Milo Goddess Patinaed Bronze Statue
    Located in Houston, TX
Monumental 19th century bronze figure of one of the most famous works of ancient Greek sculpture, the Venus de Milo. The sculpture is finely cast and exhibits a beautiful brown patina overall. The "Fonderia Chiurazzi Napoli" embossed seal is visible at the base of the sculpture. Worship of Aphrodite continued throughout the Roman period. Known as Venus, she came to symbolize Rome's imperial power. Like her Greek counterpart Aphrodite, Venus was intimately associated with love and beauty, yet other elements were distinctive to the Roman goddess. Venus's first temples were erected in Rome during the 200s B.C. to solicit her assistance in battles, and individual leaders later allied themselves with the deity. Julius Caesar and his heir, Augustus, forged particularly explicit ties to Venus, claiming descent through her son, the Trojan hero Aeneas. The goddess was repeatedly represented in civic architecture and on coins, and her attractive figure became symbolic of Roman power throughout the empire. Artist Biography: In 1905, one of the best Neapolitan chasers of the time, Gennaro Chiurazzi, recalling his sculpture master Pietro Masulli praised him highly for the fact of being the first to have marked in Naples art a completely new path, opposite to the one of the Art Academies: an artistic manufacturing that could be applied also to the industry of the time, without the risk of becoming serial. The typology of product, unique and refined, to which Chiurazzi refers to, is the one that had already made him famous everywhere: bronze and life-size reproduction of classical and Renaissance sculptures. Each Chiurazzi manufacture was obtained thanks to the lost wax investment casting technique (realized on casts of Greek and Roman originals preserved at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples, Musei Vaticani, Musei Capitolini and Museo Borghese in Rome, Palazzo Pitti, Galleria degli Uffizi and Museo Nazionale in Florence), refined then by the hands of a master chaser. The chance, unique in the history, to create casts from works of such important museums, gave the chance to the Chiurazzi Foundry to have a gallery of around 1.500 plaster casts of classical sculptures – from Doriforo to Discobolo, from Ercole Farnese to Laocoonte, from various Venuses to imperial statues, from Hellenic busts discovered in Ercolano to every kind of objects coming from Pompeii and so on –, Renaissance and modern (from Michelangelo’s Mosè to Cellini’s Perseo, from Bernini’s masterpieces to Canova’s). This fact gave the chance to the Neapolitan foundry to gain clients all over the world: not only reigning families in Europe and in the East, but also and especially tens of large Anglo-Saxon museums on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean that, to show classical beauty in all its perfect shapes and to revive the taste for the Ancient, do not hesitate to have Chiurazzi bronzes...
