Pierre Jules Mêne
French Bronze Jockey on Horse

$25,000

About the Item

“Mêne is still the most talented artist and the only one who could make Jupiter jealous of him” wrote the French critic Louis Leroy (1812-1885) at the 1864 Salon. A self-taught artist, Pierre-Jules Mêne (1810-1879) dedicated his entire career to making bronze statues, which were met with great success among both French and international clients. In 1853, Mêne obtained a first class medal for his work. But it wasn’t until 1862 that he was appointed Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur during the Universal Exhibition in London. In 1869, Nepoléon III purchased the wax sculpture Mounted Huntsman Leading his Hounds, and the third French Republic subsequently bought the matching bronze in 1872 (Fig. 1). Mêne enjoyed a spectacular reputation under the Second Empire. His small and medium-sized bronzes were in line with the taste of a new bourgeoisie of bankers, merchants and manufacturers who discovered an eye for detail in his exquisitely chiselled work. Mêne thus became the most successful and prolific animalier sculptor of his time, dedicating himself exclusively to edition bronze sculpture. Horses were among his favourite subjects to portray. It was only in 1863 that he made the present sculpture, Horse and Jockey No. 1, which he sent to the Salon under the title The Derby Winner. The success of Mêne’s bronze was immediate. The reception of this work was highly positive and critic Louis Auvray found the “spirit, keenness and truth of the artist’s talent” within it. This bronze was submitted to the 1863 Salon.
