Aluminum Wall Sculpture
16 x 16 x 16-inch, triangle shape, by 2 ½ inches wide
Signed and dated ‘68
Numbered edition 10/30
About the artwork:
This artwork is a three-dimensional aluminum sculpture that is meant to hang on a wall. It features two triangles fashioned from a single sheet of brushed silver metal. The back triangle is a solid shape while the front triangle is creased and partially cut into four strips that fold both inwards and outwards into space, like cut and folded paper.
Elegant in its simplicity, slightly menacing in its sharp beauty, this wall sculpture is a highly refined example of Pop Abstraction Art. Although Pop Art is often presented as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, and in its American wave often features iconic or comic book-type images, British abstract painters such as Richard Smith participated in a more formal style known as Pop Abstraction: in the mid-1960s became an international trend.
The artwork is signed, dated, and numbered 10 out of a limited edition of 30. The sculpture has an invisible hanging ledge ready to mount on a wall.

About the Artist: Richard Smith (1931-2016) was an English artist active in England and New York City as part of the British and American Pop Art movement. He produced work in a range of styles from Abstract to Pop and Color-field painting, exploring the idea of three-dimensional paintings, prints and wall sculptures. Smith trained at the Royal Academy in London and maintained an important place in the British art scene. His three-dimensional paintings are similar to the concepts and work of his friend Frank Stella, an American. Smith showed in the Venice Biennale in 1966, represented Britain at the 1970 Venice Biennale, and in 1975 had a retrospective at the Tate Museum in London.

Richard Smith
Charles Richard "Dick" Smith was an English printmaker and painter. He Attended St Albans School of Art followed by post-graduate studies at the Royal College of Art, London, from 1954-57. Smith shared a flat-cum-studio with Peter Blake in his second year at the RCA, and then again for two years after he left the college in 1957. When Terence Conran's Soup Kitchen opened on Fleet Street in the late 1950s, it featured a letter-collage mural by Smith and Blake. Michael Chow would later commission Smith to design installations for his restaurant in Los Angeles, and Chow and Conran have remained two of his biggest supporters. In 1959 he moved to New York to teach on a Harkness Fellowship, staying for two years, where he produced paintings combining the formal qualities of many of the American abstract painters which made references to American commercial culture. The artist's first solo exhibition was at the Green Gallery. As his work matured it tended to be more minimal, often painted using one colour with a second only as an accent. In trying to find ways of transposing ideas, Smith began to question the two-dimensional properties of art itself and to find ways by which a painting could express the shape of reality as he saw it. These principles he carried into his graphic work by introducing cut, folded and stapled elements into his prints; some works were multi-leaved screenprinting, and others printed onto three-dimensional fabricated metal. Smith returned to England in 1963 - specifically East Tytherton, Wiltshire where Howard Hodgkin was a neighbour - and gained critical acclaim for extending the boundaries of painting into three dimensions, creating sculptural shaped canvases with monumental presence, which literally protruded into the space of the gallery. Evocative titles such as Panatella and Revlon, and cosmetic, synthetic colours alluded to the consumer landscapes of urban America which had proved so influential. He showed at the Kasmin Gallery, a venture between Kas and the Marquess of Dufferin and Ava in New Bond Street, throughout the 60s, more-widely known as David Hockney's first gallery. Smith was invited to exhibit at the XXXV Venice Biennale as the official British artist in 1970. Smith taught with Richard Hamilton at Gateshead in 1965, where he met Mark Lancaster and Stephen Buckley, and again in 2000, becoming close to the artist and his wife, Terry. By the late 1960s Smith's ambition to produce paintings which shared a common sensibility with other media, such as film and photography, began to wane and he focused on the formal qualities of painting. First exhibited in New York in 1971, the traditional wooden supports of the canvases were replaced by aluminium rods and strings, allowing them to be hung freely in response to the surrounding architecture. Smith continued in the subsequent decades to construct site-specific works in public and private spaces often hanging from the ceilings or architectural supports. He resettled in Patchogue, New York in around 1977. Smith was awarded the CBE in 1971.

David Solot, a dentist and painter, was born in Falciu (Romania) and
settled in Paris in 1928. His art was surrealistic dentally inspired plus
portraits and city landscapes.
****************************
Translated from an article by Luana Hrisanti Rigot:
"In 1956, at the Charlotte Norberg Gallery (Paris), he presented his first personal exhibition, composed of an ensemble of surrealist paintings of professional inspiration (dental elements). Two years later, at Gallery Royale (Rochefort), he exhibits another 50 paintings on the subject. At that time, a decisive event for the painter David Solot was made: a great new-York-born antibiotic producer Lederle Cy learns about his work and contacts him through the US Ambassador to Paris, proposing an advertising contract and buying the reproduction right for 24 of its canvases. A year later, the same company bought the right to print three of its cloths in color. This was the starting point of his international notoriety.
In 1959, the American Dental Association celebrated its centenary, and to make it brilliant, David Solot invites him to a large exhibition at Columbus Circle, in Manhattan New York. The press, television is doing a great deal of promotion, and in the end, the interest shown by the medical professionals in the beginning only reaches an echo in the world of passionate art collectors. It is the beginning of a major international adventure!
David Solot is invited to Stockholm in 1960, then to Dublin and Belfast by the Cema Art Gallery. In 1962 his works are exhibited in Helsinki.
In 1963 his life was disturbed by a very painful event ... His only son, a medical student in the last year, dies in an accident. For two years, overwhelmed by pain, David Solot neglects painting. His wife, Becutza Solot, encourages him to go to Israel. David accepts, and the voyage and exhibition (1965) are successful.
When returning from the voyage, he makes material for an exhibition he will present at the Transposition Gallery, while at the Salon of Physicians his "Jerusalem" painting gets the Medal of Honor, the greatest possible reward.
Continuing to work on all plans, he adds a new activity to his concerns: writing. In 1967, he was impressed by a passage in Maurice Goudeket book Prés...
