About the Item

Born in 1965 in Glendale, California, Scott McMillin remained in Southern California until he entered California State University Long Beach in 1983 and then completed his studies at California State University Fullerton. Upon earning his BFA in 1989 he moved to Tustin, California where he lives and works. My sculptures are influenced and inspired by the overwhelming importance of the car in Southern California, and are in fact composed entirely of salvaged auto body parts — mainly hoods, doors, fender panels and pick-up beds. I see these car parts as infused with the memories and histories of the individual vehicles as well as the lives of their former owners. As I cut, combine and create each sculpture, it’s almost like reflecting on traffic, on the ways in which people’s lives come together, randomly intersecting on freeways or streets or parking lots for brief periods of time, nobody knowing who may be driving beside them or parked next to them, and not even taking a moment to think about it. Safe in our mobile metal fortresses, focused entirely on where we’re going and how soon we’re going to get there, we carry on with hardly a care about what’s happening now. I express these ongoing confluences in the patterns of my work, as conceptual representations of countless vehicles constantly interacting with one another in infinite ways. In a sense, my sculptures chronicle moments in time, epitomizing detached encounters with total strangers, insignificant yet integral to how we live our daily lives.

  • Untitled 6

The human element in nature is a connecting thread in Jeffrey Long’s broad swathe of paintings done over the past five decades. His paintings, expressed in various visual languages, abstract, representational, figurative, narrative, and metaphorical, are meant to bring order to direct experience. Jeffrey Long’s paintings balance elements of Modernist design with traditions from tribal and Asian art. The “Mosaic” and “Moderne” paintings present boundless associations of color and shape in syncopation. The “Numbers” series brings together mid-Twentieth Century biomorphic design and collage. The warp and weft of weaving are referenced in the “Rip Rap”, “Orchard” and “Kaokoland” paintings. The “Shelters” series introduces representational aspects. Rooflines and architecture are integrated into geometric abstraction. Jeff Long...

  • Birchband
    By Michael Kessler
Located in San Luis Obispo, CA
Michael Kessler was born in 1954 in Hanover, Pennsylvania and had his first art show in 1080. His abstract art awards include the Rome Prize for Painting from the American Academy in Rome in 1990 and the Pollock/Krasner Award in Painting. His modern artwork has been widely exhibited in the US and abroad via international and national galleries, and has been featured in over 150 SOLO exhibitions since 1983. Michael Kessler’s abstract contemporary paintings are widely collected and appear in over 20 museum collections in the US, including the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Appearances are deceptive, and anyone who is interested in the true nature of the universe knows that there are far more questions than answers. The more we know, the more we know we don’t know. I want my paintings to reflect both the desire to know and the futility of trying to know. I’m building a surface and not so much an image. I see my work as a metaphor for nature – about wondering how it (nature) got that way, realizing that we may never find out. I’m interested in beauty, but not a superficial or superfluous beauty – something deeper. It is daunting, but if you go through the forest at night...
