Steel Spray Sculpture

circa 20th century

About the Item

A fine steel spray sculpture in the manner of kinetic artist Harry Bertoia (1915-1978). Bertoia was born in San Lorenzo, Italy and moved to America when he was thirteen, studying at the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts and then attended Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield, Michigan, where he later taught and established the metalworking department. During this time, he began experimenting with jewelry forms and explored ideas that would later emerge into his sculpture. He eventually moved to Pennsylvania and joined Hans Knoll in Knoll Associates. He became a prolific architectural sculptor. His first commission was a screen for the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan. His first sculpture exhibition was in 1951 at the Knoll Showroom in New York. This sculpture consists of a square steel base with varying height short cut steel rods surrounding a center round base where removable taller rods are inserted in to create a moving “spray” effect. The sculpture is unsigned, like much of Bertoia’s work in the 20th century. Dimensions: Approximately 100 in H x 48 in W x 19 in D. Ref: 56029
