2023

About the Item

"AVIRONS, Phase Lunaire II" is a wall sculpture made of copper, bronze and steel. Corrina is inspired by the work of Louise Bourgeois, Louise Nevelson, Albert Paley, Lee Bontecou. Atlanta-based mixed media artist Corrina Sephora specializes in metal sculpture, painting, and site specific installations. Her most recent body of work, Uncharted Waters, combines ancient and contemporary technology and nautical and celestial imagery to celebrate life’s journeys, voyages and the dance with liminal spaces. They are an exploration of movement in the transitions between day and night, life and death, sky and water, earth and fire, permanence and impermanence. Corrina’s sculptures are intended to be universal, but also very personal. A repeating motif in Corrina’s work is the boat, often a reference to her sea captain grandfather and the boats built by her father. Her mother’s poetry and words also permeate through Corrina’s work, “I am sending this prayer to you from the Moon.” Conceptually there is a focus on the elements of water and air, materially the works are created with earth and fire. Blacksmiths have historically created both functional works and spiritual objects, specifically staffs that ceremoniously touch the heavens, the spirit realm, and the earth, acting as conductors of energy. They were diviners, healers and sorcerers within communities, harnessing the elements. Corrina’s Avirons (oars) are inspired by these ceremonial staffs, combined with her personal connections to the sky and water. The oar is what powers and steers, physically, scientifically, and spiritually through uncharted waters. Corrina earned her BFA in Metals and Sculpture at Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, in 1995. She received her MFA in Sculpture in 2005 from Georgia State University and has done residencies throughout the US and abroad. Her work is on permanent display at The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, The Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Greenfield Hebrew Academy, and in the collection of The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, among others.

Title: "Insiders Series (Disengaged #1.): A Tactile Journey Through Form and Narrative" "(Disengaged #1.)" from the "Insiders Series" emerges as a singular masterpiece—a one-of-a-kind sculpture meticulously crafted from hand-carved limestone and an assortment of metals thoughtfully chosen for their color and malleability. This work, like its counterparts in the series, transcends the boundaries of visual exploration, inviting the beholder to engage in a tactile experience that unravels a narrative both familiar and enigmatic. The sculpture beckons exploration not just with the eyes, but with the hands—a deliberate choice that transforms the artwork into an interactive encounter. As hands traverse the surface of the stone, a world unfolds, both impenetrable and inviting, offering a tactile journey that complements and completes the visual narrative. Each touch becomes a discovery of the familiar and the unknown, an invitation to unravel the layers of meaning embedded in the carved form. The core of this freestanding sculpture is hand-carved Indiana limestone...
