Federica Patera and Andrea Sbra Perego
Fiber painting: 'The City of Books'

2022

About the Item

The City of Books shows a map of an imaginary city made up by words: 140 quotations, taken from 40 different books and chosen following the criterion of analogy, give rise to 12 tales that compose the roads of the city. The artwork sees literature cross over into art, exit from books, and is an homage to the transformation process that leads the reader to become author, mixing roles; reading become writing, creating an access between two actions intimately connected. Clarice Lispector, Roberto Bolaño, David Foster Wallace, Jorge Luis Borges are some of the authors who can be found in the The City of Books. The artwork is made up of three layers: denim is the base, on which a carpet of pages of books printed on cotton is fixed. The carpet is the background for a map, also in denim, and each of its streets hosts one of the 12 tales. Step by step everyone can read the 140 quotes. The duo was officially born in 2017 with the RAR project, which focuses on the value of the analogy in literature. At the heart of their investigation is the dynamic that leads reading to become writing, and other way the user to become a creator, a maker, mixing roles. The exchange that is established guarantees the transmission, that it goes beyond repetition and finds its completion in transformation. The eternity of an experience, whatever it is (physical, material, emotional, intellectual), is measured by its capacity to be an eternal breeding ground for discovery and knowledge. Their work was exhibited in solo shows by art galleries, such as Raffaella De Chirico Contemporary Art in Turin and Manuel Zoia Gallery in Milan, and in Art Fair such as ArtVerona and WOP in Lugano (CH). In 2021, they were finalists in the Cramum Award. Between October 2022 and January 2023, they took part in the World Textile Biennale – Italian Act, a series of three exhibitions curated by Barbara Pavan. In January 2023 they attended their first group show in New York at the Ivy Brown Gallery.

Large Sculpture: 'Purple Fiesta: Baggage' Emotional Baggage Cart
By Theda Sandiford
Located in New York, NY
My Emotional Baggage Carts are vessels to dispose of racial trauma. The act of making, weaves the sting of macro and microaggressions into the cart, freeing me from these constraints. Each recovered shopping cart is unique, but they all are woven with upcycled materials like rope, paracord, grocery bags, rope lights, beads, fabric, and bottle caps. The cart is with a protective zip tie blanket to trap trauma and prevent its escape. For me, my Emotional Baggage Carts are a release, for you, they are an opportunity to look within and recognize any emotional baggage you, yourself may be carrying and release it. Theda Sandiford...

1970s Large Wood, Copper Inlay Sculpture Wall Relief Tropical Flowers Motif
By Helen Weber
Located in Surfside, FL
Helen Weber Large wall hanging wood and metal sculptural relief in a tropical Hawaiian or Polynesian motif with tropical flowers. "Art belongs everywhere from cruise ships to churches" This has been the mantra of Helen Webber since she began her career in the 1970’s creating hundreds of art works for public spaces throughout the United states and abroad. It was her strongly held belief that art can touch the spirit of many more people than those whose art experiences are limited to the halls and walls of museums and galleries. Her bold and richly hued art works executed in a wide variety of media, such as tapestry, glass, metal wood and clay have been installed in universities, corporations, medical facilities, cruise ships, hotels, religious spaces, community and civic centers and even in a train station. Over the years many architects and interior designers have collaborated with Helen Webber finding that her work enhanced their designed environments, giving her the opportunity to create art for well known corporations as well as multitudes of residences. It is the tapestries that she is best known for, and it is this medium that dominates the largest body of her work, which was first introduced to the design world in the mid 1970's. The tapestries utilize a fabric collage technique combining an array of designer upholstery fabrics such as velvets, brocades, worsteds, jacquards, mohair, hand woven woolens, among many others. Yarns of all kinds are integrated into the tapestries surrounding the edges of each fabric piece. Some clients, who saw that Webber’s particular art style could be expressed in a variety of media, offered her commissions in stained and etched glass, wood collage, sculpted tile...
