The artist, Georgina Brett-Chinnery, is an award winning leather worker who exploits traditional techniques to create tangible sculptural forms. Her latest series of work of which these herons are part has received the UK Cockpit Arts and Leathersellers Award two years running. The artist was inspired to celebrate the dynamic beauty and elegance of herons using her leather working skill. Please note the sculpture is not taxidermy. The heron and its partner (listed separately) is made with leather around a natural stuffing, using traditional hand cutting and tooling techniques, clay legs and white gold leafed to the body. The only natural part of the sculpture is the heron skull which inspired the piece. The bird is set on a limestone plinth. The award winning series is entirely based on birds and is entitled 'Bird Brain'. Why birds? They are intelligent two legged creatures that soar above us. Having a ‘bird’s eye view’ on our world, the artist perceives this perspective to symbolise freedom. Having social organisations much like our own, each of Georgina’s birds represents individual meanings that relate to the variances between different human beings. Bird brain delves into the conscious and asks the viewer how we see ourselves and others, for nothing is always as it seems. Note: detail image show the two birds set on wooden plinths which, being unsuitable for export, have been updated with sturdy limestone plinths. The plinth here measures 30.5 x 15 x 12 cms.
