About the Item
Edition of 12
'Sir Humphrey' a bronze sculpture of a British hare sitting in wait captures the quiet intensity and alert poise of this elusive countryside animal. Cast with a rugged, tactile surface and finished in a patina of earthy browns with mottled touches of white, the piece evokes both the hare’s natural camouflage and its raw, untamed spirit. The sculptor portrays the hare in a seated position, tall ears raised and body held in a subtle tension, as if it has paused mid-moment to listen for the faintest sound across the fields.
The rugged surface enhances the sculpture’s vitality, suggesting the layered textures of fur while also giving the work a tactile immediacy that invites touch. The mottled brown patina grounds the piece in natural tones, while the speckled white adds depth and visual rhythm, catching light in unexpected ways. Polished highlights along the ears, muzzle, and haunches further animate the form, drawing the eye to the hare’s defining features.
More than a faithful likeness, the sculpture embodies the hare’s symbolic qualities of vigilance, resilience, and wild beauty. By capturing this moment of stillness and tension, the artist transforms a fleeting encounter into a timeless bronze study of one of Britain’s most enigmatic creatures.

Tobias Martin
Tobias Martin was born in Wiltshire, 12 miles from Stonehenge. Influenced by his idyllic rural upbringing, and the forces of nature and magic that permeated his childhood surroundings, these works have something of the mystical about them. After graduating from Saint Martin’s School of Art in 1999, he still remains and works in London. His work has been shown within many prestigious, including the Royal Academy. His work can be seen as an attempt to visually articulate a great epistemological challenge: that of the human mind encountering the intellectually imponderable. Each piece is approached with precise observation and an acute interest in the minutiae of the subject matter, manipulating the material with a delicacy and lightness of touch. Despite being realised in heavy materials such as bronze, the resulting piece achieves a sense of movement and character that conveys the essential spirit of the animal. Encompassing elements of sculpture, installation, drawing, performance and video - Tobias’ practice partly relies upon the translation of scientific research methodologies to the processes of art making. This is perfectly applied particularly Tobias’ animal sculptures which capture the characteristic essence of the individual species.
