About the Item

Material: Ink, Acetate, Pins, Repurposed Banned Book "I stumbled upon this book while I was out in California, shortly after the end of a relationship. The title of this show is the question I asked then. I had left my art life and independent apartment to move west for that love. Sometimes fingerprint-pins get bent. The pinned pages are from the chapter Widening the Circle of Compassion.”- Valerie Huhn “When I was sixteen I was in a serious car accident that left me with a traumatic brain injury (TBI). As a result, I spent years in psychiatric hospitals before the condition was partially diagnosed. Final diagnosis came in late 2024—along with a new medication that addressed the area of my brain that was injured. Before the TBI, reading was a passion—worlds opened up for me when I read. For decades after it, I was unable to read large volumes or stay focused on a novel.  On my new medication, my ability and joy in reading was back. The experience made me think about the history of reading, writing, and acquiring knowledge—who was allowed to and who wasn’t. I had felt the loss of concentration and reading so keenly. I couldn’t imagine race, ethnicity or gender being reasons to be barred from those worlds.  In 2023, I was preparing for a show when I heard on National Public Radio that, in response to protests on its campus, Rutgers University had banned Susan Abulhawa’s novel, Against a Loveless World. I purchased the book and was immediately struck by the beauty of its words. It was shocking to me that ideas—novels—would be banned. And it was a growing trend throughout the U.S.  I started researching banned books and learned that, in 2023, most of the challenges to books in over 100 school districts were made by just 11 people. Many of the challenges were against Black, Asian, Indigenous, Latino, LGBTQIA+, and women authors. These are the authors I chose to center for this exhibit. The selection also aligned with the authors I started reading upon moving to NYC in 1985. All of the books in this show have been banned, save Things Fall Apart by Pema Chodrin. Percival Everett’s James may not have been banned yet, but is sure to be soon. Before this show, I celebrated marginalized people and cultures by adding colorful fingerprinted pins into texts written by white men for white audiences. For this show, I have adorned books written by authors from these varied communities to highlight the beauty of our shared identity. I selected  page spreads to fingerprint-pin with care. I wanted to highlight the humanity of each character, even the ones difficult to love. And I wanted each adorned page to include a shared interaction—the sum of who we can be together. For books written by European or American male authors, I often pinned the words. For books by marginalized people, I pinned the white space between words and sentences.”- Valerie Huhn

Patricia Miranda, Florilegium Series, 2016, cochineal dyes, antique books, pearl
By Patricia Miranda
Located in Darien, CT
Patricia Miranda's work includes interdisciplinary installation, textile, paper and books. The textiles incorporated in these new pieces are vintage linens from her Italian and Irish grandmothers and sourced from friends and strangers around the country. Each donation is documented and integrated into the work. Textile as a form that wraps the body from cradle to grave. The role of lacemaking in the lives of women both economically and historically is packed with metaphorical potential. The relationship of craft and women’s work (re)appropriated by artists today to environmental and social issues is integral to the artist's research. Her work is process oriented; materials are submerged in natural dyes from oak gall wasp nests, cochineal insects, turmeric, indigo, and clay. She forages for raw materials, cook dyes, grind pigments, ecofeminist actions that consider environmental impacts of objects. The process is left visible as dyestuff is unfiltered in the vat and finished work. Sewn into larger works, Miranda incorporates hair, pearls, bone beads, Milagros, cast plaster. The distinct genetics and environmental and cultural history of each material asserts its voice as collaborator rather than medium. The lace inserts a visceral femininity into the pristine gallery, and exerts a ghostly trace of the history of domestic labor. The combination of earth and lace references human and environmental devastation and the conflation of nature and women’s bodies as justifications for exploitation. Mournful and solastalgic, they are lamentations to the violence against women and the earth. Patricia Miranda is an interdisciplinary artist, curator, educator, and founder of The Crit Lab, graduate-level critique seminars and Residency for artists, and MAPSpace project space. She has been Visiting Artist at Vermont Studio Center, the Heckscher Museum, and University of Utah; and been awarded residencies at I-Park, Weir Farm, Vermont Studio Center, and Julio Valdez Printmaking Studio. She received an Anonymous Was a Woman Covid19 Artist Relief Grant, an artist grant from ArtsWestchester/New York State Council on the Arts, and was part of a year-long NEA grant working with homeless youth. Miranda currently teaches graduate curatorial studies at Western Colorado University, and develops programs for K-12, museums, and institutions such as Franklin Furnace. Her work has been exhibited at ODETTA, NYC; ABC No Rio, NYC; Alexey von...
