Neoclassical Style Cast Iron Window Surround

Mid-late 19th

About the Item

A fabulous mid-to-late 19th-century cast iron window surround of exceptional scale—standing nearly six feet tall—now offered with the potential to be elegantly converted into a mirror. Reputedly salvaged from a building heavily damaged during a World War II bombing, this architectural relic carries deep historical resonance. Originally part of two pairs, one has already sold for two times the current offering price. This piece has a discreet crack on the lower left side, which is barely noticeable when mounted and does not detract from its commanding presence. Now available at a significant discount, it presents a rare opportunity to acquire a monumental and storied object.

Jean-Pierre Latz Jean-Pierre Latz was one of the handful of truly outstanding cabinetmakers working in Paris in the mid 18th-century. Like several of his peers in the French capital, he was of German origin. His furniture is in a fully developed rococo style, employing boldly sculptural gilt-bronze mounts complementing marquetry motifs of flowers and leafy sprays, in figured tropical veneers like tulipwood, amarante, purpleheart and rosewood, often featuring the distinctive end-grain cuts. He also produced lacquered pieces, most famously the slant-front desk in the collection of Stavros Niarchos...
