About the Item
Virginia Mahoney’s “Remix 8: Inside Out” is a two-piece, abstract wall sculpture in yellow, brown, and red, made of ceramic shards (reclaimed from the artist’s destroyed ceramic vessels), steel mesh, and copper wire. This colorful, unique wall piece evokes the past in these recycled fragments of earlier work, their visible broken edges fitting together like a puzzle, “remixing” remnants of the artist’s earlier work. Angular lines of thick copper wire project about 10 inches from the wall and activate the surrounding space with beautiful shadows.
“Remix 8: Inside Out” is from a recent series of abstract wall reliefs, made of ceramic shards and copper wire. The works evoke memory, re-imagined narratives and echoes of the past. Mahoney devises unconventional ways of working with materials, and is inspired by new ideas in the process.

Virginia Mahoney
Virginia Mahoney is a mixed-media sculptor who currently works with garment-related forms. She makes work about discomfort and doubt, and is intrigued by the ambiguity of words, standards, and categories. Her unconventional approaches often inspire ideas. Mahoney’s objects embody uncertainty, unrealized expectations, or burdening thoughts and questions. Prior to receiving her MFA in ceramics at Cranbrook Academy of Art (MI), Mahoney graduated with High Honors from University of Florida, and was a Core Fellow at Penland School of Craft (NC). Her work has been shown in juried/invitational exhibits in the U.S., and is in the Lancaster Art Museum collection (PA). She works in her home studio in Brockton, Massachusetts.
