Anthony Michael Autorino (1937 - 2015) The son of Italian immigrants, Anthony Michael Autorino was born on September 29, 1937 in Montclair, New Jersey. As a teenager, Autorino enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served an eight-year tour. His expertise in the field of cryptography landed him in Paris in the mid-1950s as an Air Force sergeant working at the United States Embassy. While in Paris, Anthony became quite involved in the art community which reinforced his desire to make painting his career focus. Upon returning to the United States in 1961, Autorino divided time painting between upstate New York and New England. By the mid-1960s, New York City had become the center of activity for the career of this highly regarded young artist. By 1968, disillusioned by the hustle and bustle, Autorino made the decision to relocate. His passion for paintings nature and the outdoors led him to the Delaware Valley. Barrett, now of Lahaska, Pennsylvania, has been painting his entire adult life. His favorite subjects include the landscape surrounding New Hope and many local landmarks often encompassing figures into his compositions. Barrett utilizes a heavy impasto and his palette bears similarities to that of Fern Coppedge and George Sotter. Barrett’s paintings are always found in unique and somewhat charming handmade frames designed by the artist and finished in metal leaf. Weir, who was a professor of drawing at the United States Military Academy. The younger Weir continued his studies in New York at the National Academy of Design and in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where he worked under the important academic teacher Jean-Léon Gérôme beginning in 1873. Traveling to Holland and Spain during his student years, Weir was inspired by the work of Hals and Velasquez. However, the major influence on his early career was the French painter Jules Bastien-Lepage, who was well known for his realistic depictions of Breton peasants in the outdoor landscape. "Oak in Spring" is a 1930 American Impressionist oil painting of an oak tree landscape. Painted en plein-air, in an almost pointillist style, H.C. White depicts a classic Connecticut landscape. A Tall wiry tree stands as the focal point, having just bloomed its first leaves; foliage still thin enough to outline every single branch. Reds and browns scattered throughout the foreground connote autumn leaves that had yet to be cleared. Henry Cooke White (b. 1861) in Hartford Connecticut. His career in art was founded at the age of 14, when he met the famous American Tonalist painter, Dwight William Tyron. The two became lifelong friends, and White even wrote Tyron’s major biography, The Life and Art of Dwight William Tyron (pub. 1930). In the late 1880’s, Tyron pushed White to move to New York City to further his artistic training at the Art Students League. During this time, White studied under many talented artist’s; Kenyon Cox, John H. Twatchman, and William Merritt Chase. From 1896-1897, White spent time travelling in Europe. Upon his return to the states, he began to spend most of his time in Connecticut, following his favorite painting seasons. Spring in Hartford was followed a week later by spring in Old Lyme, and then finally at Waterford. He’d experience his favorite seasons three times over each year. Once immersed into Connecticut’s community, White was encouraged to paint habitually in Old Lyme; where an art colony was developing, beginning in the spring of 1903. Inspired by European artists, including Claude Monet, and Pierre Auguste-Renoir, the Old Lyme Art Colony defined American Impressionism by memorializing the serene qualities of rural New England life through use of vibrant palettes and broken strokes on wood and canvas. Henry Bayley Snell (1858 - 1943) Henry Bayley Snell was born in Richmond, England, on September 29, 1858 and immigrated to the United States at the age of seventeen. He studied at the Art Students League in New York while working for an etching and engraving company where he began a lifelong friendship with fellow artists, William Langson Lathrop. While in New York Snell met another artist, named Florence Francis, also of English descent, whom he would eventually marry in 1888. It is believed that they first came to Bucks County in 1898 to visit the Lathrops at Phillips Mill. Snell was a beloved teacher at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women from 1899 to 1943, and often took his art classes abroad during the summer. He would frequently visit his native England, spending time at the art colony of St. Ives on the coast of Cornwall. Snell would summer in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and Boothbay Harbor, Maine, where he also held painting classes. Almost all the women who exhibited with “The Philadelphia Ten” had studied with Snell either in Philadelphia or New England. Snell also taught on Saturdays at the Grand Central Galleries in New York City. The Snells made many trips to New Hope before settling there permanently in 1925. They lived on the top floor of the Solebury National Bank Building where Henry also maintained a studio. This was located at the foot of the New Hope-Lambertville Bridge and many of Snell’s New Hope scenes were painted from this location. In 1943, Snell passed away in New Hope at the age of eighty-four.
