'Scratchin' High', etching, edition not stated, c. 1919. Signed in pencil. A fine, rich impression, in warm black ink, on cream wove paper, with margins (11/16 to 2 1/8 inches). Two small spots of toning in the bottom right margin, away from the image; barely visible printing creases in the top left margin and the middle right background, otherwise in very good condition. Matted to museum standards, unframed. ABOUT THIS WORK The cowboy's work of breaking wild horses into riding horses evolved into the competitive sport of professional rodeo in the 1880s. In 1919 at the Calgary Stampede in Alberta, Canada, Borein sketched a rider on the famous bucking horse named 'I-See-U'. He later made this etching of the dramatic scene, entitling it 'Scratchin' High'. ''Scratching'' refers to the rider's technique of maintaining balance on a bucking horse by a continuous movement of the feet in a kicking motion. Impressions of this work are in the permanent collections of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West (online), and the Whitney Western Art Museum. ABOUT THE ARTIST No other artist captured the "disappearing West" with the authenticity and spirit of John Edward Borein (1872-1945). ABOUT THIS IMAGE 'Public Square' is the two-block (formerly four-block) central plaza of downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Based on an 18th-century New England model, it was part of the original 1796 town plan overseen by Moses Cleveland and remains today as an integral part of the city's center. The 10-acre (4.0 ha) square is centered on the former intersection of Superior Avenue and Ontario Street.[2] Cleveland's three tallest buildings, Key Tower, 200 Public Square, and the Terminal Tower, face the square. Public Square was part of the Connecticut Land Company's original plan for the city, overseen by Moses Cleveland in the 1790s. The square is signature of the layout for early New England towns, which Cleveland was modeled after. While it initially served as a common pasture for settlers' animals, less than a century later in 1879 Public Square became the first street in the world to be lit with electric street lights—arc lamps designed by Cleveland native Charles F. Brush. The square was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 18, 1975. Published and printed by the artist. The image (plate mark) size is 11.5 x 17.65 inches, sheet size is 19.25 x 25.25 inches. it is in excellent condition, has never been framed. About the artist: Scott Fitzgerald received his Master’s Degree in Arts from California State University Fullerton, and went on to teach drawing and printmaking for 2 years at the university. During his college years, he focused his study in contemporary art and photography, creating mixed media works often with social comments. It was not until the sophomore year, he discovered the traditional art of etching in his printmaking class. Immediately, he embraced the complex and difficult technical process of making prints from etching on copper plates. Scott Fitzgerald established himself as a prominent printmaker in the next few years. With a strong interest in history, he accepted a commission to produce a series of etching depicting 15 Orange County historical landmarks.
