Pop Art

POP ART STYLE

Perhaps one of the most influential contemporary art movements, Pop art emerged in the 1950s. In stark contrast to traditional artistic practice, its practitioners drew on imagery from popular culture — comic books, advertising, product packaging and other commercial media — to create original Pop art paintings, prints and sculptures that celebrated ordinary life in the most literal way.

ORIGINS OF POP ART

CHARACTERISTICS OF POP ART

  • Bold imagery
  • Bright, vivid colors
  • Straightforward concepts
  • Engagement with popular culture
  • Incorporation of everyday objects from advertisements, cartoons, comic books and other popular mass media

POP ARTISTS TO KNOW

ORIGINAL POP ART ON 1STDIBS

The Pop art movement started in the United Kingdom as a reaction, both positive and critical, to the period’s consumerism. Its goal was to put popular culture on the same level as so-called high culture.

Richard Hamilton’s 1956 collage Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing? is widely believed to have kickstarted this unconventional new style.

Pop art works are distinguished by their bold imagery, bright colors and seemingly commonplace subject matter. Practitioners sought to challenge the status quo, breaking with the perceived elitism of the previously dominant Abstract Expressionism and making statements about current events. Other key characteristics of Pop art include appropriation of imagery and techniques from popular and commercial culture; use of different media and formats; repetition in imagery and iconography; incorporation of mundane objects from advertisements, cartoons and other popular media; hard edges; and ironic and witty treatment of subject matter.

Although British artists launched the movement, they were soon overshadowed by their American counterparts. Pop art is perhaps most closely identified with American Pop artist Andy Warhol, whose clever appropriation of motifs and images helped to transform the artistic style into a lifestyle. Most of the best-known American artists associated with Pop art started in commercial art (Warhol made whimsical drawings as a hobby during his early years as a commercial illustrator), a background that helped them in merging high and popular culture.

Roy Lichtenstein was another prominent Pop artist that was active in the United States. Much like Warhol, Lichtenstein drew his subjects from print media, particularly comic strips, producing paintings and sculptures characterized by primary colors, bold outlines and halftone dots, elements appropriated from commercial printing. Recontextualizing a lowbrow image by importing it into a fine-art context was a trademark of his style. Neo-Pop artists like Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami further blurred the line between art and popular culture.

Pop art rose to prominence largely through the work of a handful of men creating works that were unemotional and distanced — in other words, stereotypically masculine. However, there were many important female Pop artists, such as Rosalyn Drexler, whose significant contributions to the movement are recognized today. Best known for her work as a playwright and novelist, Drexler also created paintings and collages embodying Pop art themes and stylistic features.

Subways are a melting pot of culture. The station on 14th Street offers an ideal setting to observe this diversity and engage in people-watching. On cold days, one can often see homeless alcoholics among the fashion models, Wall Street executives, and commuters from all over Manhattan waiting for trains.Painted with bright colors and in the style of David Hockney and Edward Hopper, the scene depicts artist Leroy Burt's impression of a New York City subway station...

Andy Warhol Deluxe Signed Edition of Film Festival Lincoln Center (Feldman & Schellmann, II.19), 1967 Silkscreen, die-cut on opaque acrylic Edition 2/200 (Signed and numbered on the back with engraving pen) Hand-signed by artist, As this work was done on acrylic, Warhol signed and numbered it by hand on verso with an engraving needle. Printed date with copyright Frame included: Elegantly framed in a museum quality wood frame with UV plexiglass. A die-cut window has been created in the back of the frame to reveal Warhol's incised signature and edition Publisher: Leo Castelli, New York Printer: Chiron Press, New York Catalogue Raisonne: Feldman & Schellmann, II.19 This work is often hung and displayed both vertically and horizontally - see photos for inspiration This work is one of only 200 done on opaque acrylic rather than wove paper, signed and numbered on the opaque acrylic by Andy Warhol with an engraving pen. (Separately, there was an unsigned edition of 500 on wove paper). What distinguishes this rare, extremely desirable signed edition of 200, other than that it is signed and numbered by hand by Andy Warhol, is that the black graphic text FIFTH NEW YORK is placed directly over the text Film Festival of Lincoln Center; whereas in the edition of 500, the text black text FIFTH NEW YORK is placed on top of the white text. An innovative feature that appears in this special edition is a perforated line running across the surface of the print, at its triangular cut out sides, mimicking the tear line present in real commercial movie admissions tickets. Chiron Press commissioned by Lincoln Center, devised a special process expressly to imprint the edition with this perforation using a die cut stamp. This work is quintessential early Warhol, with characteristic bright neon colors, featuring text, along with the artist's very recognizable flower motif. The Lincoln Center ticket...

Junk Food Junkie - Large Original Pop Art Painting on Canvas

By Nelson De La Nuez

Located in Los Angeles, CA

As one of the world’s most collected, significant pop artists today, Nelson De La Nuez is a born iconoclast. Using his unique juxtaposition of pop culture and surrealism, blended with America’s rich culture and history, De La Nuez has created works of art that are considered timeless. Listed on the “Who’s Who List of the Most Collected Artists of Our Time,” his works are original, bold and outspoken. The artist is known for his distinctive, trademarked style called “Art on the Edge,” which is creating art on all sides of the canvas. This one-of-a-kind pop art painting measures 42 inches square. De la Nuez used Mixed Media, Acrylic Paint, and Oil Pastel on Canvas to create this original artwork. It is signed on the front and the back by the artist. The sides of this artwork are created as a continuation of the front and it does not require framing. It is wired and ready to hang. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable U.S. and global shipping are available. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included. Nelson De La Nuez was born in 1959 in Havana, Cuba, and came to the United States at age seven. He was raised in California. De La Nuez studied Art History at Boston University where he was inspired by the French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist periods. Though his paintings are clearly Pop Art, the subtle humor of artists like Edouard Manet and Pablo Picasso echo throughout his playful work. De La Nuez’s work hangs in some of the most prominent private collections of movie stars, directors, producers, comedians, and corporations. His work has been purchased by Sotheby’s for future auctions and his works sell out consistently at major international shows and fairs. Nelson De La Nuez tries to create a new generation of art lovers, drawing upon icons and art history to entice younger minds, in turn provoking the interest of the generation above them. The L.A. Times called De La Nuez “the comedic da Vinci of our times.” His ability to use non-related images to achieve a whole new and stimulating outlook on life has brought him many awards and published features. The artist continues to challenge himself to incorporate new and exciting ideas into his art and his style. He believes he is a success if his art inspires people to think beyond the norm. Artplex Gallery has been representing and exhibiting Nelson de la Nuez's original artworks since 2016. Artplex Gallery is a partner gallery of Artspace Warehouse. Artspace Warehouse has been a 1stdibs partner since 2014 with consistently excellent reviews from clients worldwide. The gallery exhibits a large selection of original artworks from established and emerging international artists with diverse backgrounds at high standards. BASQUIAT Kestner-Gesellschaft exhibition catalog 1986

BASQUIAT Kestner-Gesellschaft exhibition catalog 1986

By Jean-Michel Basquiat

Located in NEW YORK, NY

Jean-Michel Basquiat Hanover 1986: Rare 1986 Basquiat catalog published on the occasion of Jean-Michel Basquiat Kestner-Gesellschaft Hannover: 28 November 1986 to 25 January 1987. Featuring 60 works by a then 25 year old Basquiat, Kestner is widely remembered as Basquiat’s last major exhibition during his lifetime. Medium: softcover exhibition catalogue. Bound in stiff wraps. Text in German. Approximately 100 pages. Features full-page images of over 30 Basquiat paintings, in addition to several in collaboration with Andy Warhol. Very good overall vintage condition. From a scarce edition of unknown. _ We are a 1stDibs seller since 2016 specializing in Basquiat, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, KAWS & more. _ Jean-Michel Basquiat was an influential African-American artist who rose to success during the 1980s. Basquiat’s paintings are largely responsible for elevating graffiti artists into the realm of the New York gallery scene. His spray-painted crowns and scribbled words referenced everything from his Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage, to political issues, pop-culture icons, and Biblical verse. The gestural marks and expressive nature of his work not only aligned him with the street art of Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf, but also the Neo-Expressionists Julian Schnabel and David Salle. “If you wanna talk about influence, man, then you've got to realize that influence is not influence,” he said of his process. “It's simply someone's idea going through my new mind.” Born on December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn, NY, Basquiat never finished high school but developed an appreciation for art as a youth, from his many visits to the Brooklyn Museum of Art with his mother. His early work consisted of spray painting buildings and trains in downtown New York alongside his friend Al Diaz. The artist’s tag was the now infamous pseudonym SAMO. After quickly rising to fame in the early 1980s, Basquiat was befriended by many celebrities and artists, including Andy Warhol, with whom he made several collaborative works. At only 27, his troubles with fame and drug addiction led to his tragic death from a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988 in New York, NY. The Whitney Museum of American Art held the artist’s first retrospective from October 1992 to February 1993. In 2017, after having set Basquiat’s auction record the previous year with a $57.3 million purchase, the Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa surpassed it, buying the artist’s Untitled (1982) at Sotheby's for $110.5 million. This set a new record for the highest price ever paid at auction for an American artist's work. Today, Basquiat's works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among others.
