The National Museum of Women in the Arts presents P(art)ners: Gifts
from the Heather and Tony Podesta Collection, an exhibition of 28
contemporary photographs and sculptures drawn from the more than 300
works the couple has donated to the museum. P(art)ners demonstrates
the Podestas' shared collecting vision and honors their participation
in the inaugural TEDWomen conference in Washington D.C.
The Podestas' collaborative collecting practice inspired the NMWA
staff to hand them the curatorial reins for this exhibition. The two
have articulated the themes for P(art)ners and selected the works.
Images of the female body or allusions to it (such as seen in G-Force
Dive, a witty sculpture by E.V. Day (American, b. 1967) made from
women's thong underwear stretched into the shape of fighter jets) present
multiple views of contemporary feminine identity.
These works exploring the female body are paired with photographs of
architecture. Although they are built by and for people, the interior
spaces lack human presence and appear surprisingly abstract. The
Podestas note that images of constructed environments complement those
of the human figure: "They are what remain of us when we're not
there."
Heather and Tony Podesta each head their own government relations firm
in Washington, D.C., but they travel to contemporary art fairs and
biennials around the world to discover outstanding new artists.
P(art)ners features a striking series of photographs about travel by
Nicoletta Munroe (American, b. 1968). For her "Paris Métro" series,
Munroe, who has also worked as an art director in Hollywood, shot the
brightly colored seats on the platforms of Paris's subway system. The
rows of seats seem to stand in for the people who fill the stations
each day.

UnNaturally features over 40 visually stunning works by fifteen
artists who employ artificial materials to create simulations of
nature that explore the frequently blurred boundary between culture
and our environment, raising provocative questions about the mediated
environment in which we live. UnNaturally plays on our nostalgia for
an idealized pre-industrial past in which human beings and nature
coexisted harmoniously in an unspoiled landscape.
Artists includes Chris Astley, Gregory Crewdson, Jacci Den Hartog,
Allan deSouza, Keith Edmier, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, Jason

Annual Events for Young Murasaki (July) - Tales of Genji - Japanese Woodblock
Rightmost panel a triptych, depicting monthly events for Wakamurasaki (Young Murasaki). This is the month of July. There appears to be a lesson taking place, possibly for writing or poetry.
Artist: Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)
Publisher: Ebisu-ya Shoshichist
Presented in a new blue mat.
Mat size: 19"H x 13"W
Paper size: 14.5"H x 10"W
Commentary on the triptych:
In the Edo period, Tanabata was designated as one of the five seasonal festivals, and became an annual event for the imperial court, aristocrats, and samurai families, and gradually came to be celebrated by the general public. Its origins are said to be a combination of the Kikoden festival, which originated from the Chinese legend of Altair and the Weaver Girl, and Japan's ancient Tanabata women's faith. Ink is ground with dew that has accumulated on potato leaves, poems and wishes are written on five colored strips of paper, which are then hung on bamboo branches to celebrate the two stars that meet once a year. Although the illustration is a Genji painting...

Elizabeth Higgins (Canadian, b. 1960)
Elizabeth Higgins describes herself as an abstract figurative and landscape painter. Everything around her serves as a potential subject, an inspiration to begin a painting. Fidelity to the landscape, the figure, or the still life is relative, as she isn’t interested in literal depictions; instead, it’s the abstract relationships of these shapes and colors, the abstract pictorial design that drives her work.
Higgins’ paintings are rooted in the tradition stemming from Courbet, Derain, Bonnard, Matisse, Morandi, German Expressionism, and the Canadian Group of Seven (also known as the Algonquin School of landscape painters, 1920–1933). She is influenced by the work of her artist-teachers Paul Resika—himself a student of Hans Hofmann—and Robert De Niro, Sr. (1922-1993), as well as the paintings of contemporary artist Peter Doig. Her artistic evolution stretches across this continuum.
It is the “in-between”, the hovering between representation and abstraction, that interests her, not the labeling effect of details; instead, she aims directly at the spirit of the painting—of making something come to life. John Goodrich wrote in her catalog essay, “Elizabeth Higgins’ direct brushwork and simplified forms suggest an energy, but crucially, reveal a painter who knows the power of color…”
Elizabeth Higgins was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1960. As a Helena...
