Santa Barbara art photographer Cheryl Medow creates images that entice the viewer to enter her world, both real and imagined.
Cheryl Medow's background in the arts is diverse, but interconnected.
Medow studied ceramics at the famed Chouinard Institute and received a BA in Art from UCLA, concentrating on life drawing with charcoal and pastels. Continuing her art education, she studied printmaking at Hand Graphics in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
With a wealth of materials and techniques, Medow layers her photographs and weaves them together to create visual narratives.
There have been numerous articles written about her work. Avian Alchemy by Becca Cudmore was published by Audubon News/Culture on June 5, 2015, Proof. National Geographic - An Altered Reality by Becky Harlan along with National Geographics Sunday Stills, Sunday, July 12, 2015 and an article in Inspire Adobe Photoshop For The Birds by Alyssa Coppelman in August.
In 2016, Medow was included in the SLIDESHOW Night at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Century City, California. She received the Juror's Award at PhotoPlace Gallery in Middlebury Vermont for Great Blue Heron With Chicks Revisited and her print will be exhibited from March 23 through April 22 and White Ibis With Fish will be part of the Online Gallery Annex at PhotoPlace.
Medow was a finalist in the 89th Annual International Competition at The Print Center in Philadelphia given the Olcott Family Award. She is also a finalist at the LensCulture Earth Awards 2015.

Artist Biography: A Nebraska native, Mangelsen’s love of nature, his life outdoors and business success were heavily influenced by his father. An avid sportsman, Harold Mangelsen took his sons to favorite blinds along the Platte River in Nebraska to observe the great flocks of ducks, geese and cranes that migrate through the valley. From these adventures, Mangelsen learned important lessons for photographing in the field, most notably patience and understanding animal behavior. In 1965, Mangelsen began studying business at the University of Nebraska. In 1967, Tom transferred to Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, where he changed his major and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology. Tom continued postgraduate study in zoology and wildlife biology at the University of Nebraska and Colorado State University. In 1970 Mangelsen moved to Nederland, Colorado. He spent two years living in the Rocky Mountains in an old mining shack without electricity or running water with his English setter, black lab and raccoon. Tom continued to work on his photography and studied arctic alpine ecology at the University of Colorado’s Mountain Research Station near Nederland. There he met Bert Kempers, a CU film producer, who later hired Tom as cinematographer and film editor for his company Westwind Productions, making educational and nature documentaries. Tom longed to make a documentary about the Platte River and its great wildlife resource. He returned to the Platte each spring to film the great crane migration. These experiences led to Tom traveling to the cranes’ nesting grounds in Alaska and their wintering areas in Texas. Zack Seckler's series, “Botswana,” is comprised of a series of exquisite aerial photographs taken in the Kalahari basin in south central Africa between 2009 and 2010. The body of work offers a quite different and almost magical view of the much-photographed and iconic landscape. Virginie Schroeder is an innovative artist based in Quebec, Canada. She puts in play lines, circles and other geometric forms to create works with subjects that are not immediately visible. Verbal and psychological interplay with the public is integral to her creative process. Her art is the result of reflection, and of aesthetic intuition provoked by the geometric of forms. Her art exists to intrigue, to elicit questioning of its abstract character visible at first glance. One must focus on a single point and draw away slightly to begin to glimpse the impressively detailed work in its totality. Above all, Schroeder wants things not to be visible immediately.
This original 30-inch high by 60-inch wide acrylic on canvas artwork is wired and ready to hang. The sides of the artwork are painted by the artist and it does not require framing. It is signed by the artist on the bottom and back of the painting. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and global shipping available. In order to perceive the works, the viewer must feel them, open up all of their senses and live them fully. It is insufficient to live the emotion of the work; Schroeder urges the viewer to enter the work, allowing their spirit to be absorbed into its face. Her paintings are made to inspire new artistic visions, while impressing their stunning technicality on the public.
When a face, an animal, a landscape, or any other subject is evacuated of its linear structure, it acquires a completely different form, a different identity and dimension, a new prestige. One does not recognize it at first sight; it emerges as the very process of observation. It is here that the magic occurs, as the viewer consciously discovers a work of abstract character in vivid color which plays upon the tension between the figurative and the imaginary.
Virginie Schroeder seeks an invented, unstructured, a different and yet popular vision, and hopes to awaken our senses in the search for her works.
