Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA)
Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA)
Founded in 1962, the Art Dealers Association of America is a vetted community of more than 180 top-tier galleries across the United States. Working with these member galleries, ADAA appraisers offer assessment services for artworks spanning from the Renaissance to the present day. The ADAA also arranges public forums on important art-related topics and hosts The Art Show, presented each year at New York’s Park Avenue Armory, which stands out among art fairs for its acclaimed selection of curated booths — many of which are one-artist exhibitions.

Brass Mounted Georgian Campaign Dressing Table Box Gentleman's Necessaire C.1795
Located in Incline Village, NV
Very rare and hard to find in this complete condition with as many pieces (over 35), this "Gentleman's Necessaire", or campaign "Dressing Table Box" is English and circa 1795 as per the style, and confirmed by the 18th century silver marks on items enclosed. Campaign furniture, and accessories were made to tend to the day to day needs of those traveling, most often for the upper class, the military, and those in high socioeconomic standing. A very similar Campaign box belonging to the Duke of Wellington and now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, appears on page 141 (illustration #157 of "British Campaign Furniture" published in 2001 by Nicholas A. Brawer; the leading recognized historian on the subject. The furniture and accessories were designed to be easily unpacked and packed back up again, condensed and compact for minimum storage, and still fulfill luxury "needs" for the well to do. The flush inserted brass handles on this box were designed to minimize protrusions for easier transport when traveling. The necessaire contains a plethora of instruments, utensils, storage bottles, boxes, to contain pills, medicine, potions, soap, shaving needs, snuff, beverages, spirits, tea, coffee, fragrance, incense, toothpaste, ink, and anything else necessary or wanted to maintain appearance and the "Beau Brummell" type lifestyle desired by the aristocratic gentleman. These items were housed in; screw top miniature bone canisters, fine cut glass crystal vessels with silver and silver plated tops, multiple miniature vertical wooden pocket drawers, a carved wooden lidded soap dish; all "fitted" in a beautiful brass bound and hinged mahogany box. The dressing box is neatly divided into various sections to store these implements. The center front bottom drawer is independently accessed and opened by a key lock and likely utilized for personal effects, jewelry, money, and letter writing, and diary entries.; note the fitted interior, design, "cubbies", and sections (see image). NOTE: It would be advisable to NOT use the key to lock this drawer just in case it stays locked and does not reverse, thereby creating difficulty reopening the drawer. The box maintains it's original surface and there are no restorations to any of the wood or brass mounts. A non discernible script monogram on a brass plate adorns the top (see image). Worth noting is the copious provenance accompanying this piece; the original description tag from the British antiques dealer; the "condfdential" letter by purchaser to recipient "Horace" reviewing the Dressing Box attributes and description; and finally, the Customs form for entry into the United States with Santa Barbara it's ultimate destination and a valuation of 3 pounds; less than ten dollars at that time---- 1950!!!!! (see images). Dimensions: 11" wide  x 8 3/4" deep  x 5 1/2" high Contents: implements in red bag sewing hook with shell handle second smaller sewing hook with built in swivel tool to bone handle large metal tweezers rectangular bone device with center hole small hook with bone handle silver plate corkscrew...

Georgian Jewelry Case, English, circa 1790
Located in Incline Village, NV
This all original nicely grained mahogany, 18th century Georgian jewelry case was made in England, circa 1790. It was obviously crafted for the aristocracy, as jewelry boxes from that era are very rare. A multi-use lift out compartmentalized baize lined interior drawer, with a plethora of different sized sections accommodates various types of jewelry, from rings and pendants, to bracelets. Lifting out this drawer reveals a larger area beneath, to place necklaces, and store other valuables. This is also green baize lined. The box is in excellent condition and all original with the original finish; a gilt molding to the bottom above the four bracket feet circumvents the case. The jewelry case is very well made, quite heavy in stature; has three hinges to the back, and the original brass keyhole escutcheon to the front. A beaded molding to the base of the lid, and an additional inlaid molding to the top completes the decoration. Dimensions: 17" wide x 13" deep x 6 1/2" high Provenance: Richard Gould Antiques...

Gentleman's Shaving Necessaire Kit, American, circa 1902
Located in Incline Village, NV
This compact unique "Gentleman's Shaving Necessaire Kit" was used by a man while traveling, for the purpose of tending to his shaving needs; especially as more and more men were doing away with their beards as they became somewhat less stylish at the turn of the century. It might also have been provided to a male guest in an Inn or rooming house while traveling. The three interior implements consisted of a porcelain shaving cup (moustache cup), a shaving brush to apply the shaving cream, and a fold out straight edge razor. The outer case is a cream colored celluloid with a floral design to the sides and top, and two child winged nymphs in molded relief decorating the majority of the surface. The original brass clasp and escutcheon decorate the front, and facilitate closing the case. The interior maintains it's original blue satin. The three shaving items are original to the case; the shaving cup is divided into two sections---one for the shaving cream and one for the water to rinse the brush. It was also referred to as a moustache cup and when clean and empty, it could be used as a drinking cup. The moustache would fall into the deep section while tilting the beverage inward keeping the moustache dry. Of note, while beards became somewhat less fashionable, moustaches were still very much in vogue. The brush was made by "Ever-Ready" (a popular shaving brush maker), and the bristles are made of pure "badger" from the underside of his belly. Badgers are native to central North America. On the brush is printed "Ever-Ready" "Set in Rubber" "139S". On the other side is printed "Sterilized" "Pure Badger" "S" (see images). The handle of the straight edge razor is cream and rust colored with a celluloid floral molded relief design. The carbon steel blade has printed "The Celebrated" and "Hollowground Razor". It has a slight chip to the very end. Very interesting to note the underside inscription. I can't quite make it out entirely, but it seems to say "Jahn From" (the maker or the owner?). "Dec. 27 '02" perhaps date of manufacture. "Mary" (maybe a gift from Mary? (see image). Judging by the interior implements, the design, and of course, the inscription underneath, the shaving kit...

The hardwood case is wrapped in a celluloid green floral design, with Victorian scenes to the front panels, and a pastoral farm image to the top. The front two panels depict a young couple in different poses. Original fancy brass mounts and escutcheons complete the exterior decoration. The interior is lined in pink satin material, with fitted compartments to hold and store a multiplicity of grooming items, with a mirror in the backdrop. There are eight grooming items, which includes two cream jars, a nail buffing pad, a needle, a spring loaded hair clasp...
