Florentine style refers to the art and architecture coming out of Florence, Italy during the Renaissance period. Florentine furniture is characterized by the heavy use of gilding on wood and very elaborate carved decoration.
The frame comprises a centered leaf shield, richly carved grapes, pieced leaf and flower motifs though out, barley twist to the top and sides.
It is certain to make a charming addition to that one special room in your home.

The grandiose masterful carving incorporating C-scrolls, flowering branchwork, stylized icicles, acanthus leaves, and distinctive architectural follies and figures which firmly place this mirror within the canon of Johnson's greatest designs. The confident execution is a great testament to the technical prowess and artistic creativity of one of the greatest carvers and designers of the eighteenth century,

Thomas Johnson (1723-1799)
Thomas Johnson was one of the most skilled carvers and furniture designers in Georgian England. Drawing inspiration from the Fables of Aesop, the rococo, China, and the idealised rustic life, his work is whimsical, exuberant and witty. Chippendale borrowed freely from his work. Johnson was a founder member of the 'Antigallican Society', a group who excoriated the French taste.
In addition to its relation to Johnson's designs, this mirror also reflects the influence of Lock, the great master with whom he worked for a period. Lock published many sketches and pattern books, including A New Book of Ornaments for Looking Glasses in 1752, introducing several idiosyncratic features which Johnson would adopt such as the small decorative urns...

Imitating the Dutch eighteenth century Baroque style, and crafted in France in the nineteenth, this exceptional piece is a large rectangular silvered mirror, combining a decadent, indulgent, elaborate Baroque design with the skill and proficiency of nineteenth century French craftsmanship. Notable for its impressively large size, it features delicate floral embellishments and a decorative vase surmount, and this stunning antique mirror would make a beautiful addition to any elegant interior.
Although it was made in France, the silvered mirror is actually fashioned in the 18th century Dutch style. Known as the Dutch 'Golden Age', this period of the decorative arts was inspired by the previous Baroque style forms, which can be distinguished on the present antique mirror. Originating in 17th Century Italy, the ornate Baroque style is characterised by its dramatic exuberance and luxurious decadence. Floral garlands and scrolling foliate imagery are common to Baroque design, as is the use of heavy textiles such as velvet and damask. The influence of the Baroque is evident in the silver mirror's heavily ornamented frame, which features lavish, swirling embellishments that are balanced by the structured rectangular frame below. The Baroque style of the Dutch Golden Age experienced a 19th Century revival, which is excellently demonstrated by this large antique silvered mirror...
