International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA)
Launched in 1987, the International Fine Print Dealers Association has continually set the bar for quality and ethics while promoting prints as original works of art to generations of collectors, curators and art lovers. With over 160 members in 13 countries, the IFPDA is a worldwide community of leading dealers and editions publishers who represent the full spectrum of printmaking. Each year, the IFPDA hosts the IFPDA Print Fair in New York, the only major fair dedicated to fine-art prints.

William C. Grauer (1895-1985) was born in Philadelphia to German immigrant parents. After attending the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art, Grauer received a four year scholarship from the City of Philadelphia to pursue post graduate work. It was during this time that Grauer began working as a designer at the Decorative Stained Glass Co. in Philadelphia.

The Artist's Studio. c. 1914. Oil on canvas. 24 1/8 x 32. The canvas is in fine condition, having been professionally lined, cleaned and varnished. The painting is housed in a 29 1/2 x 37-inch Sully-style gold frame. Signed, lower right and also on the verso of the canvas in the center of the image.
Hurlburt apparently created a 'period piece' work of art. The two maids are dressed in late 19th-century clothing. The slight puff at the top of the sleeve is 1897 - 1898. The maid on the left has her scarf done in a way that is quite Dutch or Flemish. The woman on the right has a headscarf that could just be the tie of the scarf making that shape in the front. If her hair is done up with a chignon in the back causing the scarf to be full in the back, the placement of that bun would make the piece 1908 - 1912. The "Psyche knot" was very popular in 1910. The woman in the painting on the easel is maybe old fashioned with a simpler and fuller version of early 20th century hairstyles. It's hard to tell if what is around her neck is a boa or a collar, but boas of all shapes and sizes were popular in the 1890's. Her gown is decidedly unfitted and appears to have a loose belt at the waist. If the skirt is in layers with the light skirt length over a darker skirt, that would put the outfit in 1910 or 1914. The problem is the waist. In 1910 - 1912 it was a neo-empire revival with a high waist. It wasn't until 1914 that the waists were coming back down with sashes at the waistline. It is just not specific enough to see the details that would help to date it. I guess I would be inclined to date it more 1914 - the approximate date of the woman in the painting, and assuming that the maids are dressed in an old fashioned way, but their skirts are awfully full and long for the period to be practical for cleaning.
Irving E. Hurlburt lived and worked in New Haven, Connecticut. For most of his life, he resided at Wolcott Street in New Haven. Possibly the room is the artist's studio. He studied at the Yale School of Fine Arts, 1890-93 He was a member of the New Haven Paint and Clay Club. In 1888 he received the Ethel Childe Walker Prize at the Yale School of Fine Arts. His sketches of Pictures of New Haven show historic buildings, scenes and events of New Haven, CT. They were reproduced as wood engravings in the New Haven Almanack for the years 1906 to 1913, published by Ye Olde Hardware Store of the John E. Bassett Co. Baumberger was one of the most prolific Swiss poster artists, with well over 200 designs to his credit. Beginning in 1917, he regularly worked for PKZ. This poster is not only the best he produced for the company but is also an icon in poster history. The tweed coat is rendered in near-photographic perfection to the point where you can practically feel the fabric. Baumberger took a totally new approach to advertising by ingeniously incorporating the poster's text into the image in the form of the label in the coat. With this poster Baumberger cemented his role as master of the "Object Poster," (a title he earned four years earlier with a classic image of a top hat), and began the trend of "New Objectivity" within the Swiss school of Graphic Design. Kuhn’s sculptures were collected by the noted early modernist collector John Quinn (1870-1924). Among the works in Quinn’s collection was the icon Brancusi Portait of Mlle Pogany, the work that inspired Kuhn to create the wood carving “Mask” (FA10815). Mlle Pogany was chosen by Kuhn for exhibition at the Armory Show, 1913. Other sculptures by Kuhn are in the collections of the Smithsonian Museum and the Heckscher Museum.
The group of 15 wood carvings came from the estate of the artist to his daughter Brenda Kuhn.
The Kuhn Estate (Brenda) originally worked with Kennedy Galleries of New York who published a detailed illustrated catalog of offerings from the estate in 1967. The estate left Kennedy Galleries some time prior to 1983. They established estate representation with Barridof Galleries of Portland, Maine in partnership with Salander O’Reilly Galleries Inc. of New York. This partnership published a monograph catalog on the artist in 1984.
Of our group of 15 works, three of the early c. 1913 examples have Salander O’Reilly labels affixed to them. The group of works were involved in the Salander O’Reilly bankruptcy liquidation where they were bought from. There have been several related examples that have come to auction since the year 2000.
In 1912, Kuhn was one of the founders of the organization Association of American Painters and Sculptors, the organizing body for
what became known as The Armory Show, 1913. The Heckscher Museum exhibition, European Modernism, as Told by Americans, gives insight in to Kuhn’s travels, artistic associations and the influences on his artwork.
“In 1912 Kuhn traveled through Europe securing loans from artists and dealers to represent Impressionism, Post Impressionism and the newer strains of art like Fauvism and Cubism. Inspired by these developments, Kuhn tried out Fauvism and Cubism for himself.”
“Kuhn would later become an adviser to collectors like John Quinn and Lillie Bliss, a supporter of the Armory Show and later one of the founders of the Museum of Modern Art.”
Quinn acquired seven Kuhn sculptures in wood, bronze and gilt bronze which are listed in his estate inventory.

The Roaring Forties is the name given to strong westerly winds found in the Southern Hemisphere, generally in the areas between the latitudes of 40 and 50 degrees south in the Southern Hemisphere, where the prevailing winds blow persistently from the west. The roaring forties have strong, often gale-force, winds throughout the year. They were named by the sailors who first entered these latitudes. Norman Wilkinson also etched the subject.
In 1899 he acquired a studio in Malden, Essex, and bought a 3 ton cutter which, with his young family, he would spend eight or nine months a year, sailing to Calais, along the Belgian coast and through the Dutch waterways, constantly sketching and painting in both oil and watercolor.
In 1922, after a meeting with the etcher James McBey, Briscoe returned to etching once more producing plates of some of his sea sketches. The two artists sailed together in Briscoe's, forty-ton yacht, the "Golden Vanity...

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Painter, printmaker, and craftsperson, Mary Van Blarcom was born in Newark, New Jersey, and studied at Wellesley College. She was a member of the National Serigraph Society where she served on the board of trustees from 1945 through 1952 and was 1st vice-president from 1949-51. She was also a member of the National Association of Women Artists, the Artists Equity Association, the American Color Print Society, the New Jersey Artists Association (Director), and Artists of Today.
Van Blarcom exhibited actively throughout the 1940s at many prominent art organizations including: Montclair Art Museum, 1941-45 and 1947-51 (prize, 1948); Society of Independent Artists, 1942-44; Artists of Today, 1942-46; Elisabeth Ney Museum, 1943; Northwest Printmakers, 1944, 1946-49; Laguna Beach Art Association, 1945-47, 1949; National Association of Women Artists, 1945-50, (prize, 1946); Library of Congress, 1946-47; Museum of Modern Art Traveling Exhibition, 1945-47; Carnegie Institute, 1947; Serigraph Gallery, 1946, 1951 (solo); American Color Print Society, 1947-52; Newark Museum, 1947-48, 1951; California State Library, 1947, 1949; National Serigraph Society, 1949 (prize), 1950 (prize); University of Chile, 1950; New Jersey State Museum, 1950; Philadelphia Art Alliance, 1951; and the Main Gallery, NY, 1952.
