Grzegorz Majka is the innovative creator of unique, made-to-order stone furniture and the owner of Grzegorz Majka Ltd. His modern designs for stone tables and other furnishings and decor — which are crafted with distinctive materials such as granite, quartzite, Calacatta marble, European oak, and hand-blown glass — make a bold statement in any space. 

Majka studied interior design but found himself drawn to stone masonry. Beginning in 2004, in his role as a stonemason, he sought to develop new approaches to working with natural stone as the primary material in furnishings for the home and other projects. This effort naturally led him to create tables and decorative objects, but as a stonemason, he was criticized for endeavoring to create furniture from stone. Design enthusiasts reacted much differently, however — those in the market for provocative furniture and decor that could be functional as well as serve as a focal point found a lot to love in Majka’s work. 

After several years, Majka gained new contacts and partners who believed in his ideas for projects and controversial combinations of materials. He founded his namesake firm in London in 2020. Today, he works solely with interior designers and architects who share his vision to create interiors that are not only fashionable but practical.

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chair — crafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.

It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.

Visionary craftspeople such as Paul Evans introduced bold, geometric designs that challenge the traditional idea of what a coffee table can be. The elongated rectangles and wide boxy forms of Evans’s desirable Cityscape coffee table, for example, will meet your needs but undoubtedly prove imposing in your living space.

According to interior designer Tamara Eaton, the material of your vintage coffee table is something you need to consider. “With a glass coffee table, you also have to think about the surface underneath, like the rug or floor,” she says. “With wood and stone tables, you think about what’s on top.”
