Finding the Right storage-case-pieces for You

Of all the antique and vintage case pieces and storage cabinets that have become popular in modern interiors over the years, dressers, credenzas and cabinets have long been home staples, perfect for routine storage or protection of personal items.

In the mid-19th century, cabinetmakers would mimic styles originating in the Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI eras for their dressers, bookshelves and other structures, and, later, simpler, streamlined wood designs allowed these “case pieces” or “case goods” — any furnishing that is unupholstered and has some semblance of a storage component — to blend into the background of any interior.

Mid-century modern furniture enthusiasts will cite the tall modular wall units crafted in teak and other sought-after woods of the era by the likes of George Nelson, Poul Cadovius and Finn Juhl. For these highly customizable furnishings, designers of the day delivered an alternative to big, heavy bookcases by considering the use of space — and, in particular, walls — in new and innovative ways. Mid-century modern credenzas, which, long and low, evolved from tables that were built as early as the 14th century in Italy, typically have no legs or very short legs and have grown in popularity as an alluring storage option over time.

Although the name immediately invokes images of clothing, dressers were initially created in Europe for a much different purpose. This furnishing was initially a flat-surfaced, low-profile side table equipped with a few drawers — a common fixture used to dress and prepare meats in English kitchens throughout the Tudor period. The drawers served as perfect utensil storage. It wasn’t until the design made its way to North America that it became enlarged and equipped with enough space to hold clothing and cosmetics. The very history of storage case pieces is a testament to their versatility and well-earned place in any room.

In the spirit of positioning your case goods center stage, decluttering can now be design-minded.

A contemporary case piece with open shelving and painted wood details can prove functional as a storage unit as easily as it can a room divider. Whether you’re seeking a playful sideboard made of colored glass and metals, an antique Italian hand-carved storage cabinet or a glass-door vitrine to store and show off your collectibles, there are options for you on 1stDibs.

Questions About Hardware For Doors
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2024
Yes, RH is the same as Restoration Hardware. When the company opened in 1979, Restoration Hardware was its name. On January 1, 2017, the name officially changed to RH. The shift was meant to represent the company's move away from its hardware store beginnings toward a focus on high-end furniture and housewares. On 1stDibs, find an assortment of Restoration Hardware furniture.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Hermès Permabrass hardware is a type of hardware found on some bags produced by the French luxury fashion house Hermès. It is an aluminum metal with an anodized finish that appears gold or silver, depending on light conditions. Shop a wide variety of Hermès bags on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
To authenticate Chanel hardware, consider the weight. Real Chanel hardware is heavy solid metal. In fact, chain straps and fasteners were 24-karat gold until 2008. Flimsy lightweight metal or plastic is unlikely to be real. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of expertly vetted Chanel bags.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023
To protect Hermès hardware, keep it safe from extreme temperatures, chemicals and moisture. Wipe and clean the hardware on your Hermès handbags and shoulder bags regularly with a soft cloth, and don’t apply harsh cleaning products. Store your bag in its original box inside of its dust cover when you’re not using it. Additionally, try to refrain from putting your handbag on the floor. It will collect bacteria and you will increase the risk of corner wear. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of Hermès bags.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
Yes, some Prada bags do have gold hardware. However, the Italian luxury fashion house also produces handbags with silver hardware. All of the hardware on the brand’s accessories should be either all silver or all gold, including the zippers, clasps, grommets and the feet on the bottom. If you see a bag that has a mix of gold and silver hardware, or hardware that’s neither silver nor gold, there is a chance that it is a fake Prada bag. Shop a collection of Prada from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 27, 2024
What the style of Restoration Hardware is called can vary from piece to piece. Generally, the brand's style is modern. Some pieces skew rustic, while others are more industrial. Restoration Hardware also produces pieces that are in line with coastal and farmhouse design sensibilities. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Restoration Hardware furniture.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 1, 2024
Yes, Restoration Hardware does have sales from time to time. However, it is rare to find any products deeply discounted at the store, even during sales events. In addition to shopping Restoration Hardware online at the official website and in stores, you can also find the brand's products on trusted online platforms like 1stDibs. Shop a selection of Restoration Hardware pieces on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
Yes, some Chanel bags have silver hardware. The French luxury fashion house also makes bags with gold-toned hardware. On 1stDibs, find a variety of Chanel bags.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 22, 2024
Where Restoration Hardware furniture is made depends on the piece. Most of the luxury brand's furniture comes from factories in China. However, the company does manufacture some furnishings in the U.S. and other countries, such as Australia, Indonesia and India. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Restoration Hardware furniture.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Paneled doors are constructed using several pieces of wood rather than one single slab. Paneled doors have been popular around the world for hundreds of years.

Door grilles, also known as privacy grilles, are used to allow air movement between multiple spaces. A door pediment is the triangular piece of material that sits under where two roof points meet. In classical buildings, the pediment was typically supported by columns. Shop a selection of door pediment décor from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 5, 2021
A contemporary door refers to a door that was designed in the present day. Although influenced by past movements like Art Deco and minimalism, contemporary design is the style of the present, and so is constantly changing. By definition, contemporary is fluid and can’t be tied to a particular period. On 1stDibs, you can find a variety of antique, new and vintage doors.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 28, 2021
A door chest is a small cabinet with shelves and is used for storage. They are usually found in bedrooms and living rooms to provide a little extra storage. Shop for a range of antique and vintage door chests on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
An arch door provides stylistic flair to a space. Instead of the traditional rectangular shape, the top of the door is arched in a half circle. Arch doors can be used on a building’s exterior or interior. On 1stDibs, find a collection of arched doors from some of the world’s top sellers.
    1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
An arch door is any door with an arched top. Arch doors have been popular in many places over the centuries, and you can find examples in every material from wood to metal. On 1stDibs, shop a wide collection of arch doors from some of the world’s top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
Whether or not Hermès hardware is real gold depends on the bag and hardware type. Generally, gold-finish hardware features 18-karat or 24-karat gold plating. Silvertone hardware is usually palladium. Typically, Hermès hardware shows off a glossy polished finish, but the designer has also created bags with matte brushed metals over the years. On 1stDibs, find a variety of Hermès bags.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
