Roger Tallon Stairs

French

Roger Tallon was a French Industrial designer. After studying as an engineer (1944–50), Tallon was employed by Caterpillar France and DuPont. In 1953, he joined Technès, the technical and aesthetic studies office founded in 1949 by the father of industrial aesthetics, Jacques Viénot and Jean Parthenay. Being rapidly promoted to the technical and artistic director at the agency, he became the sole director after Viénot's death in 1959. In 1957, he enrolled at the École des Arts Appliqués (School of Applied Arts) in Paris and put in place the first design course in the country. In 1963, he set up the Design Department of the École Nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris. As a consultant for the US company General Electric, Tallon designed refrigerators and washing machines and set up the Design Department of the American company. In 1966, the Téléavia P111 portable television was put on the market against the advice of the Board. It broke the mould of TV design and was a commercial success with a cult following. In 1973, Tallon set up agency Design Programmes. Brother-in-arms with the LIP watchmakers, he created the Mach 2000 brand of watches and chronometers. In 1974, with Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, he created a concept aircraft cabin for Air France. After leaving Euro RSCG, he continued to work independently. Tallon died on 20th October 2011, after a long period of sickness.

Helicoid Staircase Model M400 by Roger Tallon, France 1964
By Roger Tallon
Located in Chicago, IL
An extraordinary Helicoid model M400 staircase by French designer Roger Tallon, 1964. Tallon originally designed this piece for Gallery Lacloche Edition in Paris and it has since become a piece of design history. This iconic staircase features a steel central pole, on which twelve polished cast aluminum paddle shaped steps are affixed in a spiral. The bottom landing step is slightly larger. Each step has a textured circular black rubber inlay and the staircase sits on a landing pad. Monumental Oak Spiral Staircase With Massive Oak Trunk in One Piece ± 450 cm
Located in Baambrugge, NL
A monumental, completely free-standing, dark oak spiral staircase. The central newel of this very large spiral staircase consists of an entire solid oak tree trunk, which is made into a strong pole with a diameter of 30 cm. Because of this, the bullnose steps around it have remained firmly in place for 150 years without sagging. The oak round edge (stringer) that surrounds the steps consists of large, hand-worked, strong pieces of oak that show the extraordinary craftsmanship of the stair builders. The banister consists of a wrought iron railing that on wrought iron spindles or balusters with rosettes, starting with an ornamented cast iron hand baluster. The underside of the stairs, between the stringer and the central newel, was originally plastered. This plaster had to be removed in order to break out the staircase in one piece, without cutting it. When the stairs are placed in a new house, plaster can be applied again. The photos show how we got the stairs out in one piece by breaking down an inner wall and an outer wall. The original plaster of the stairs is also clearly visible in the photos. The measurements are: Total height: 448.5 cm 22 steps of 19.5 cm high plus the last step to the landing is 23 x 19.5 = 448.5 cm Step width: 77 cm Width bottom step: 88 cm Depth steps: 9 to 46 cm, in the middle of the step ± 30 cm. Pole diameter: 19 cm Total staircase diameter (including the handrail): 175 cm Height of the round outer edge of the stairs 20.5 cm. Height of the bannister...
