BIO
Michael Loew (1907 – 1985) was the son of a New York City baker. After high school, he was an apprentice to a stained-glass maker, and from 1926-1929, he studied at the Art Students League. In 1929, he traveled to Paris, North Africa, Germany, and Italy with a group of artists. When he returned to New York City in 1931, the Great Depression hit Loew unexpectedly, and for the next two years he paid his apartment rent with his paintings. In 1935, he found work with the WPA where he painted murals and partnered up with longtime friend Willem de Kooning in 1939 on a mural for the Hall of Pharmacy at the New York World’s Fair. Their friendship lasted for the rest of their lives. In the mid-30’s he painted in Mexico and the Yucatán documenting the construction of a U.S. Naval airbase on Tinian Island. Enjoyable vintage MCM (Mid-Century Modern) Art Deco figural jester or harlequin table lamps in the style of Marbro, a pair. Comprised of molded plaster, hand painted details, antiqued gold painted stems and finials, and new black silk like drum shades. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. There were some cracks and chips that have been repaired. Let’s get this party started!!! Did you know, a jester, court jester, fool or joker was historically a member of the household of a nobleman, or a monarch employed to entertain guests during the medieval and Renaissance eras? A jester was also an itinerant performer who entertained common folk at fairs and markets… and now this whimsical performing duo is ready to entertain YOU!!! This is a lively pair of figural table lamps in the style of Marbro comprised of molded plaster with intricately hand painted details. They have antiqued gold painted finials under new black silk like drum shades. The male is wearing a fabulous one piece garment embellished with gold and black diamonds, a cape with a broad gold ruffled collar, a black face mask with bright blue eyes, a Renaissance pirate style hat, and he is jamming out on his mandolin with one foot perched upon a ball. The female jester or “Plaisante” appears to be dancing and getting her groove on to the beat of the mandolin. Her outfit matches the male jester with black and gold diamonds down her pants, an identical wide gold ruffled collar, and a gold zig zag on the front of her top. And let’s not forget to mention her gorgeous gold shoes!! She also has a black face mask with blue eye slots and her hat is pointed with jewels on the front. She holds a facial fan which she waves as she dances and a shawl that drapes loosely across her back and flows as she glides to the music. They are sturdied by antiqued gold painted stems and they both stand upon a square base stacked upon a larger gilded square with rounded edges… They are absolutely EXQUISITE!!! Can’t you just hear the strum of the strings and see them laughing and dancing in front of their King or nobleman? We certainly can! They will be wonderful in a game or entertainment room, in your living room, one on each side of the sofa upon a pair of end tables or side by side on a sofa table, or in your bedroom, one on each nightstand beside your bed. They are mid-century modern with a little Art Deco and Hollywood Regency flair and will blend in beautifully with many décor styles. If you are a clown collector or jester lover and have been searching for just the right addition to your home… you just found it! They are amusing, completely charming, and sure to entertain you and your guests for years to come!! There’s no more time for “funny business….” You simply MUST make them YOURS!!!

Sculptural, functional, and comfortable! The Series 7 chair was designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen in 1955 and is an icon in modern furniture history. The Fritz Hansen website states that the chair is made from 9 layers of pressure molded veneer for strength, flexibility, and durability despite its slender form. This one was made in 1993 and it is comprised of a molded black painted plywood seat which is uniquely shaped for the human body. Ergonomically enjoyable!! It has the chrome four-star leg base with chromed hooded wheel casters. It’s incredibly versatile, with unique character and unmatchable comfort. It is manually adjustable in height, and it swivels! It will make the perfect office or desk chair in your Scandinavian Modern or mid-century modern style home office or den.
Fritz Hansen was founded in 1872, when Fritz Hansen, a Danish carpenter, founded his own furniture company and in 1915 introduced his first chair in steam bent wood. In 1934, Fritz Hansen began his collaboration with Arne Jacobsen resulting in some of the famous, classic icons of Danish Design including the “Ant” in 1952, the Series 7 in 1955, the Grand Prix in 1957, the Swan in 1958, and the Egg in 1958. Other famous collaborations have resulted in Piet Hein’s super-elliptical table from 1968 and in 1982 Fritz Hansen acquired the rights to a major part of Poul Kjaerholm’s furniture collection. William Holt Yates Titcomb (1858 - 1930) was an English artist. He was a figurative oil painter, particularly known for his depictions of the Cornish fisherfolk.
Titcomb was born in Cambridge, the eighth child and first son of the Rev. Jonathan Holt Titcomb and his wife Sarah. He was educated at Westminster School in London and began his art training at the South Kensington School. His father was appointed the first Bishop of Rangoon, Burma in 1877 and Titcomb joined him there in December 1880. In Burma he made a series of paintings and sketches of life in the local monasteries.
Titcomb was taught in Paris by Gustave Boulanger and at the Royal College of Art in Antwerp by Charles Verlat. He married Jessie Ada Morison, in 1892. She was also an artist, living at the time in St. Ives, Cornwall.
His painting Primitive Methodists at Prayer, was displayed at the Dudley Museum and Art Gallery in 1889. It won many international medals and was the first of three paintings that Titcomb completed of the Primitive Methodist congregation of Fore street, St. Ives.

Handsome pair of walnut tone wood accent or dining armchairs with black wool-like fabric upholstery. They are in wonderful original condition. The fabric is nearly perfect. The walnut stained, we believe ash, wood does show signs of age and use but nothing outstanding. There is wear to the stain on the arms where hands have rubbed. We call this patina.
