In the 1950s, as backyard patios replaced old-fashioned front porches, furniture makers like Brown Jordan, Knoll, Salterini and Woodard rode the tide of postwar optimism with venturesome designs that today are having a fashion comeback. “I use vintage furniture wherever possible, including in my own garden,” says Mario Nievera, the renowned Palm Beach–based landscape architect. “Most vintage furniture is so comfortable and well-scaled for residential gardens.
