Victorian pair of Staffordshire pottery hand painted copper lustre dogs with split legs, circa 1860. They have well defined fur, a black muzzle and golden eyes. The dogs have typical crazing, one dog has an old chip and crack to the underneath / side. Because these figurines were hand made they are not perfect, and that is their character and appeal. Mid 19th Century Oil Painting Dogs by Joseph Stevens
By Joseph Stevens
Located in Casteren, Noord-Brabant
An oil painting of two rustic dogs fighting over a piece of food. It is painted on an oak panel. Signed top left. The signature is a bit faded, it's a monogram J.S. by Joseph Stevens. He often signed with a monogram. In a gilded frame frame with gesso moldings. Dimensions frame: 41 x 47 cm Dimensions painting: 17 x 23 cm. Joseph Stevens is the older brother of the very well-known artist Alfred Stevens. In the book 'The Belgian Art Book' by J. de Geest, it is written that Joseph Stevens has given a new dimension to painting animals. Joseph Stevens is an early representative of realism and social art. While Eugene Verboeckhoven has royal dogs pose on a beautifully embroidered cushion, Joseph Stevens already has an eye for the dark side of animal existence: exploitation by man, who in turn is a victim of society. His first successful painting, Brussels in the morning, shows how miserable dogs and poor people suffer the same fate. In the Sandman, Stevens shows a joint effort of man and dog, in which the viewer cannot ignore the social conditions: exhausting labor at dawn in some suburb. The gray sky and monochromy of the suburb add to the sinister atmosphere. Joseph Stevens was one of the first artists to take the urban proletariat as his subject. Stevens enjoys a very high reputation in his Parisian years. His brother Alfred writes: 'I am of this time, but you, Joseph, you are of the race, and thus you are of all times.' French critics agree. Stevens' works are a source of inspiration for the literature of the time. For example, Beaudelaire writes a poem about Stevens' dogs. Joseph Edouard STEVENS. Belgium, 1819-1892 Stevens was a painter, etcher and engraver. Brother of the gifted painter Afred Stevens. Education at the Academy in Brussels (1834-1835). Debuted at the Salon in Brussels in 1842. Continued his career in Paris in 1852. He was primarily the painter of canvases depicting domestic animals (dogs, monkeys, horses), sometimes in curious, even idiosyncratic situations, and far from romanticism. This realism, of which he was one of the pioneers, earned him the interest of critics and intellectuals. His approach was defined by this contemporary realism that eschewed idealized depictions of animals as heroic emblems of nobility. Rather, Stevens emphasized the ordinary animals of everyday life, with a particular focus on working dogs, stray dogs and all of the mutts that wandered the streets of Brussels. Museums and public collections, including' Royal Museum of Fine Arts Brussels, Ghent, Hamburg, Paris, Musée du Louvre, Rouen, Musee des Beaux-Arts. Stuttgart, State Gallery. King Leopold...

2 Antique 1862 Minton International Exhibition Jeweled Turquoise Plates
By Minton
Located in Dayton, OH
Pair of two Minton plates, circa 1862. Provenance : Jerome Schottenstein Estate, Columbus Ohio. Jerome was was an American entrepreneur and philanthropist, co-founder of Schottenstein Stores Corp. The Schottenstein family were Lithuanian immigrants who began an extensive business empire in the late 19th Century. Schottenstein Stores owns stakes in DSW and American Signature Furniture; American Eagle Outfitters, retail liquidator SB360 Capital Partners, over 50 shopping centers, and 5 factories producing its shoes and furniture. It also holds an ownership interest in American Eagle Outfitters, Wehmeyer in Germany, Cold Stone Creamery and The Mazel Company. These superb quality Minton plates are from a dessert service shown at the International Exhibition of 1862 in London. The plates testify to the enduring influence of 18th Century Sèvres on the tastes of Victorian high society. The designs are far from being mere copies, however; while there are recognisable Sèvres elements, they are arranged in entirely new and delightful ways. On the rim are four imitation cameo heads of classical deities en grisaille on a red-brown ground, within oval reserves wreathed in laurel. The profiles are individually painted; compare, for instance, the winged helmeted heads of Hermes/Mercury and you will spot subtle differences. The cameo devices, used here for the first time by Minton, derive from the celebrated Sèvres dinner...

Nature morte aux deux coupes de verre (Still-life with Two Glasses), ca. 1970
By Claude Venard
Located in Washington, DC
Claude Vénard was born in Paris in 1913 to an established, middle-class family from Bourgogne. Although he was a businessman, his father accepted and supported his devotion to the arts. The blossoming artist was accepted at the prestigious École des Beaux-arts but quickly rejected the formality of traditional academic art training. Instead, Vénard began attending night courses at the École de Arts Appliqués at age seventeen to supplement his independent education. After six years of dedicated study the painter was forced, due to economic difficulties, to withdraw from the school and seek employment. Vénard became a restoration specialist at the Louvre to support himself in 1936. The artist considered his experiences conserving Old Master paintings to be invaluable to the development of his style and technique. In the same year that he started working at the Louvre, Vénard participated in a group show at Galerie Billet-Worms. Respected art critic Waldemar George hailed the exhibition as an immense success, proclaiming, “Let’s be young again! Painting is not dead. Its course has not stopped. Forces Nouvelles is born.” The Forces Nouvelles movement, which included artists like André Marchand...

George Lance Period Signed Picture Portrait
By George Lance
Located in Roma, IT
Beautiful oil on canvas painting depicting a young noblewoman sitting outdoors with a bouquet of flowers in her hand and a cage on the ground, by the great English artist George Lance This painting, never before on the market, comes from a private collection and is beautified by an impressive antique frame in gilded wood, in almost perfect condition. Every item of our Gallery, upon request, is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Sabrina Egidi official Expert in Italian furniture for the Chamber of Commerce of Rome and for the Rome Civil Courts. George Lance (24 March 1802 – 18 June 1864) was an English painter of still life and portrait miniatures. Lance was born at the old manor-house in Little Easton in Essex. His father was William Lance who had previously served in a regiment of light horse and was at the time of Lance's birth an adjutant in the Essex yeomanry; he later became the inspector of the Bow Street horse-patrol. His mother, Louisa Lucy (née) Constable, with whom his father had eloped from boarding-school, was the daughter of Colonel Constable of Beverley in Yorkshire. Although Lance showed a predilection for art at a very early age, he was placed, while not yet fourteen, in a factory in Leeds. However, the work injured his health and he returned to London. Wandering one day into the British Museum, he casually started a conversation with Charles Landseer, who happened to be drawing there. On learning that Landseer was a pupil of Benjamin Haydon, he went early next morning to that painter's residence, and asked to become a pupil. Haydon replied that if his drawings promised future success he would instruct him for nothing. Not many days later Lance, still not yet fourteen, entered Haydon's studio, and remained there for seven years, at the same time studying in the schools of the Royal Academy. While designing a picture inspired by Homer's Iliad, he decided, before putting on the colours, to paint some fruit and vegetables as practice. This work attracted the notice of Sir George Beaumont, who purchased it, and this success led him to paint another fruit-piece, which he sold to the Earl of Shaftesbury. He then painted two fruit-pieces for the Duke of Bedford...
