Adolph Brougier was born on September 23, 1870, in Stuttgart. He was the son of a German merchant whose family was of French origin. Brougier studied art for three years in Munich and later spent a year in Paris, where he studied under Benjamin Constant and Bouguereau. From there, he went to Rome, where he also took up sculpture. Settling down in Munich, Brougier became a member of the Ktinster Genossenschaft and Luitpoldgruppe. He lived in England from 1901. Brougier exhibited at Munich, Berlin, Salon at Paris and Royal Academy. He was a figure and landscape painter and had a membership for the Royal Society of British Artists. Besides painting, Brougier liked fishing, bicycling and mountain climbing.

The former Curator of Oil Paintings at the National Maritime Museum, E H H Archibald, says of Joseph Heard in his Dictionary of Sea Painters in Europe and America that "…with Samuel Walters he must stand as the top-ranking Liverpool ship portraitist of the 19th century." He would have known the artist's work well as the National Maritime Museum has eleven paintings by Heard in its collection.
Joseph Heard was born on 7th March 1799 in Egremont near Whitehaven in Cumberland. Fine 19th century oil painting of a bustling Austrian/Germanic village with horse, rider and various figures outside an Inn, attributed to Arthur Georg Ramberg (1819-1879), well known for figurative genre paintings. The rider is carrying a bugle, apparently announcing news to the people; men are sitting by the table drinking, one with a raised stein. Women walking by stop to listen, a man carrying a sack has stopped to watch the rider, people are in the Inn doorway, and one is looking out the window. Children pause their playing.
