Stonehouse had an extraordinary life. As a young art student studying fashion illustration, he joined the Royal Artillery at the beginning of WWII but soon became a part of the Special Operations Executive (SOE). He was sent to France as a radio operator but three and a half months later was caught by the Gestapo, tortured, given a death sentence and then selected for slave labour. He spent the subsequent war years in three French prisons and five concentration and labour camps, including Dachau. He still managed to continue to draw in some of the camps. Following the war, Stonehouse went to the US and continued his career as a fashion artist painting for magazines like Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Elizabeth Arden. BIO
Hugó Scheiber was born in Budapest in 1873. At the age of eight, he moved with his family from Budapest to Vienna.
In 1898, to help support his family after they had returned to Budapest. He started working during the day, attending painting classes at the Commercial Art School in the evening. In 1900, he completed his studies.
Scheiber showed an early interest in German Expressionism and Futurism. In 1915 he met Marinetti, who invited him to join the Futurist movement. Because Scheiber's paintings conflicted with academic style of the Hungarian art establishment, his work was virtually ignored in his own country. In 1919, he and his friend Béla Kádár held an exhibition organized by Hévesy in Vienna, which was a great success, so much so that the Budapest Art Museum purchased two of his drawings.

In person, with the human eye, the paper looks reasonably smooth with out blemishes.
For this fashion illustration, Georges Lepape paints a stunning abstract pattern for the subject dress that is repeated in her hair. The work represents an early use of metallic paint, with silver metallic in the dress and bronze metallic in the blouse. Lepape's highly detailed drawing becomes more evident the closer you look. It's quite amazing how deftly he rendered facial feature on such a small scale. Alexander Oscar Levy (1881-1947) was a painter, illustrator, printmaker, and designer. He was one of the few American painters who worked primarily in the Art Deco style. Outside of a short sojourn in New York City, he spent his entire career in Buffalo, New York.
Born in 1881 in Bonn, Germany, Levy was brought to Cincinnati, Ohio at the age of three. He was a child prodigy; at age eight he won a citywide art prize awarded by a local newspaper; at twelve, he turned down a scholarship to study the violin in Europe. In his teens, Levy studied at the Cincinnati School of Music and the Cincinnati Art School under the artist Frank Duveneck.
His career began by preparing Spanish-American War snapshots for publication in the Scripps-Howard newspaper chain. Between 1902 and 1908 he attended the New York School of Fine and Applied Art. Levy took art classes from William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri which gave him a foundation for portrait painting; their influence can be felt in his later work. He also studied with landscape painter Ossip Linde.
Levy moved to Buffalo in 1909 to become art director for the Matthews-Northrup Company. His illustrative work appeared in popular magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post, Saint Nicholas Magazine and The Century. He worked as an art director at the Larkin Soap...
