Depiction of the commander Prince Eugene of Savoy with a baroque curly wig and in armor on horseback, holding the field marshal's baton in his right hand, the horse performing the classic riding figure of the 'Levade' and based on an oval plinth, as well as on a separate, original high base with the views of Belvedere Palace and a fleeing Turk in front of Vienna in relief, on the sides the coat of arms of the city of Vienna and the imperial double-headed eagle. PRINCE EUGENE OF SAVOY-CARIGNAN (1663 - 1736): Born in France as the great-nephew of Cardinal Mazarin. The fact that Eugen could not pursue a promising career in the French army enabled him to enter Austrian military service. As early as 1683, the young prince took part in the defense of Vienna during the Turkish siege. Shortly after his first military actions, as well as after his participation in several subsequent significant battles against the Turks, he became a senior officer in the Austrian army. Prince Eugene's victory over the Turks at the Battle of Zenta (1697) represents both one of the most important turning points in European history and a glorious high point in Eugene's military career, who was appointed Field Marshal, Commander-in-Chief of the Austrian Army. In 1929, Josef Hoffmann, founder of the legendary 'Wiener Werkstätte, designed this world-famous mocha service. Hoffmann was one of the greatest designers of the 20th century and a member of the 'Vienna Secession' with artists such as Gustav Klimt, Adolf Loos and Otto Wagner. Due to its numerous curves, it still places the highest demands on Augarten's porcelain painters when it comes to handling the air brush. The exoticism of the fruit shapes with the perky handle knob as well as the pleasantly grippy handles, whose softly undulating shape elegantly reflects the softly ribbed walls of the vessels, characterise the charisma of this service. Vienna Augarten Horse, Spanish Riding School Figure Type: 'Capriole' The rider stands next to the Lippizzaner Horse, who is about to jump, and holds it by the reins. The figure depicted is called 'Capriole' (Italian 'capriola' which means high jump) and it's an exercise of classical School of Riding where the horse has to jump very high: After having arrived at highest point of flight path the horse has to kick with hind legs in order to touch down again in safe manner. Vienna Augarten Horse Spanish Riding School Figure type: 'Pirouette' The seated rider leads the striding horse with the reins; he has a sword attached to his side, the rider's red jacket is decorated with a gold button hem and epaulets. The striding horse denotes a figure called 'Pirouette': pirouettes are ridden as a step, gallop and piaffe pirouette on two hoofbeats. The forehand moves in a circle around the hindquarters, which, however, also describe a very small circle around a center point as close as possible to the inner hind leg.
