Azucena Card Tables and Tea Tables

Italian

Vintage Azucena furniture is elegant and inviting — the esteemed mid-century Milanese manufacturer’s wall lights, armchairs and side tables, which are marked by simple symmetry and thoughtfully contrasting materials, can likely be found in the living rooms of design lovers all over Italy.

Azucena was founded in 1947 by three leading figures of 20th-century Italian architecture: Luigi Caccia Dominioni, Ignazio Gardella and Corrado Corradi Dell’Acqua. The trio initially established Azucena in order to furnish the interiors of buildings they’d designed but found a robust business opportunity in manufacturing individual pieces from those collections for postwar consumers. And as the company founders borrowed the brand name from a conniving character in the Giuseppe Verd opera Il Trovatore, it is appropriate, then, that the furniture for which Azucena is known is practical but exudes a hint of playfulness.

The best of Italian modernism combines cheekiness and bold functionality with provocative and thoughtful design, and Azucena is deeply rooted in that tradition. While its brass-and-walnut mid-century-modern-era dining tables and stackable coffee tables — created by the likes of Dell’Acqua and Vico Magistretti — are exceptionally unobtrusive in small spaces and framed in clean lines, Dominioni designed chunky, enveloping armchairs during the 1970s upholstered in striking red fabric.

Among Azucena's most successful and iconic designs is also Dominioni's most famous piece of furniture: the minimalist Catalina chair. After it debuted at the Milan Triennial in 1957, the Catalina chair, with its generously curving enameled steel frame and plush leather cushion, became an instant sensation. Dominioni’s other enduring designs for Azucena include the Monachella lamp, the ABCD armchair and the versatile Cilindro ottoman.

Italian furniture manufacturer B&B Italia acquired Azucena in 2018 and has reissued a number of designs from the legendary brand’s portfolio, such as the Imbuto lamp, the Catalina armchair and the Cavalletto table.

Vintage Heywood Wakefield Wheat Finish X Base Square Coffee Table
By Heywood-Wakefield Co.
Located in Chattanooga, TN
There's a rich, deep, aged honey patina on this wheat finish birch / maple. We achieved a a near perfect muted grain and color match to the top surface that we delicately restored. This sleek, study, understated and classic modern coffee table embraces mid-century minimalism design. The "X" base with intersecting spanners adds an appealing architectural elegance that remains timeless to this day. Sculpted, and assembled with no visible hardware. This restored Heywood-Wakefield 392-G square coffee table is an elegant expression of mid-century minimalism, crafted in the signature wheat-maple finish that has made the brand so revered. It measures approximately 36 inches by 36 inches (91 × 91 cm) across the top, and stands about 15.75 inches (40 cm) high — a scale that delivers both generous surface area and low, relaxed visual impact. The design is beautifully composed: a square tabletop with softened edges floats above an intersecting “X”-base, with crossed stretchers that add structural elegance and visual interest without heaviness. The wheat finish has a muted grain: blond tones, subtle warmth, and a light yet rich surface that reflects light softly while grounding surrounding furnishings. The craftsmanship is clean: wood joints are refined, hardware is concealed, allowing the form and wood grain to speak. Restoration has been carried out with great attention to authenticity. The tabletop has been professionally refinished to match original specifications: color, finish sheen, and grain pattern restored. Minor imperfections remain — tiny surface marks and perhaps slight variances on the X-base spanners — but these serve as testament to its vintage provenance rather than detractions. The legs and base are solid and stable; the table presents as both handsome and durable. Because of its proportions and design, this piece works beautifully in a range of interiors. It can anchor a sprawling seating area in a living room, serve as the central gathering point in a lounge, or provide surface and sculptural presence in modern or Scandinavian-light-wood interiors. Its square silhouette allows symmetry in layout; its wheat finish harmonizes with wood tones, brass or matte metal accents, soft upholstery, and even minimalist or muted color palettes. We're certain you won't find a more sublime vintage rendition of this coffee table anywhere. Stamped by the maker with illegible date. Excellent restored vintage condition. Top has been professionally refinished by our in-house cabinet shop.Only very minor age appropriate imperfections remain on the legs and spanners. Heywood Wakefield Coffee Table...
