Bela Kadar Art
Hungarian, 1877-1955
Béla Kádár was a Hungarian painter influenced by Der Blaue Reiter, Cubism, Futurism, Neo-Primitivism, Constructivism and Metaphysical painting. Born in Budapest on June 14, 1877, Kádár became a distinctive modernist painter whose career spanned several decades. Kádár began his studies in 1896 and for this, he traveled to Paris and Munich. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and won the Kohner prize in 1910. Kádár's early works, which he began exhibiting in 1918, showed the influence of the Secessionists and Post-impressionists. In 1923, he exhibited with his friend Hugó Scheiber in Berlin at Walden’s Sturm Gallery and 57 of his works were shown. Der Sturm was one of the most important avant-garde galleries in Europe and Kádár continued to exhibit there for several years. Kádár traveled to the United States and stayed for a year. He exhibited with the Société Anonyme at the Brooklyn Museum. In 1929, he returned to Budapest to exhibit his works in his home country. Kádár was personal friends with Chagall, Picasso, Kandinsky and Kokoschka. Like his contemporaries, his style evolved through the decades of the 20th century. His subjects range from Hungarian legends, metaphysical, portraits and fanciful decorative themes. Kádár's place in the history of Modern Art has been assured by the publication of two books on his life and works. Kádár died on January 22, 1956, in Budapest.

Undoubtedly Klimt’s best known and most reproduced images, this printed version of The Kiss is the only one with which Klimt was directly involved. Unveiled at Vienna’s Kunstschau 1908, and saved for the fifth and final delivery of Das Werk, The Kiss marks a triumph in Klimt’s career and represents a culmination of many themes in his oeuvre up to that point. Considered in relation to the eight multicolored collotypes which preceded its print debut in the Das Werk portfolio, The Kiss literally embraces all which came before it. The golden seaweed dangling in tresses from the lovers’ feet harkens back to Water Snakes I and II. The bed of flowers evokes the settings Klimt created in both The Golden Knight and The Sunflower. "Ma première lithographie date de 1954. Elle représente un enfant en haillons portant deux seaux d'eau, d'après un croquis rapporté de Cordoue lors de mon voyage en Espagne en 1952. Je l'exécutai sur pierre, au pinceau et à l'encre lithographique. Je fus déçu du résultat et n'en tirai qu'un essai et une épreuve.
Quatre ans plus tard, je réalisai une dizaine de nouvelles lithographies, toujours sur pierre, la plupart en noir.
Au lieu d'employer l'encre et le crayon lithographiques, j'utilisai l'encre zincographique plus fluide me permettant de travailler à la plume ou avec de fins pinceaux de martre. Le tirage fut très satisfaisant. au grand étonnement du Père Guillard, lithographe.
Jusqu'alors l'encre zincographique ne servait qu'à la zincographie. Actuellement elle est d'un usage courant puisque pratiquement toutes les lithographies se font sur zinc et non plus sur pierre, ce qui facilite la manipulation. Par ailleurs, le zinc offre autant de possibilités que la pierre.
En 1959, La Guilde de la Gravure me demanda une édition en couleur. Je choisis une nature morte aux chardons, tirée à 220 exemplaires.
Par la suite, les tirages varièrent de 10 à 160 épreuves.
Mes lithographies en couleur étaient assez proches de mes toiles. A partir de 1968, période de La Danse, je supprimai petit à petit le clair-obscur et la matière pour donner plus de légèreté et de transparence.
Les lithographies postérieures à 1970 sont dessinées en noir sur un fond coloré souvent volontairement arbitraire, donnant l'aspect d'un dessin rehaussé.
La couleur n'est pas intégrée au dessin mais joue un rôle d'accompagnement du trait qui est lui-même une arabesque écrite.
