ABOUT:
Brian Pearson’s search of quiet moments within the ever-increasing calamity of the modern world drives this new series of images. The medley of black and white images is split between the figurative and the architectural. The raw, candid quality in his imagery inspires a different sense of place and time in each photograph, creating a collection that demands the individual attention of the viewer with each melodic piece.
In the invitational image, “Falling”, a shirtless man falls from a steep cliff above a dark, watery abyss within a dense forest. His limbs are relaxed as his torso twists away from the viewer, a curiously assured leap despite the unknowns of the rocky surface below. Because of the high-contrast nature of the black and white image, the man’s body becomes one of the only sources of light, literally highlighting this moment of airborne suspension. Pearson’s raw, intimate portraits are reminiscent of Bruce Weber, whom Pearson lists as an early inspiration for his innovative, at times controversial work during the Reagan Era.
Another black and white image, “Roman in Tub”, centers on the exhausted figure of a man collapsed in a dark, outdoor tub...

ABOUT:
In the hazy, warm New York summer, little is more refreshing than reclining on the beach in the mist of the icy ocean waves or enjoying a family trip to the country house. Each summer, Rice curates her favorite show, the Summertime Salon, which reminds us of this exact seasonal sentiment. The two, long walls of the gallery become mosaicked, top to bottom, side to side, in photographs that evoke all the preeminent feelings and memories of summer. Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece comes into fruition. This year is no exception. The show is a haven of what the Robin Rice Gallery stands for, a community of art and experience.
As the largest annual exhibition, the Summertime Salon is carefully pieced together, the results are staggering. The works of the 53 gallery artists come together communally, reinforcing the overall sense of unity that the show creates as a whole. In knowing the photographs so fluently, Rice strategically places them together in a way that will enhance the individual stories contained in each. Details from one image flow from into the next, elevating every photograph in a distinctly unique way.
This year’s invitational image, “Surf Club” by Silvia Lareo-Vasquez, features a woman in a vintage sun hat...

remembering the way, 2021
archival digital print on Surface Gampi, Rives BFK
25.5" x 25" unframed
28.75" x 27.75" framed
Edition of 5
Marie Navarre’s deep interest in poetry, especially the Japanese form of Haiku, has had a profound influence on her work. She conjures dreamlike images that appear to be from just outside the realm of human observation, like the fragments of a distant memory. She prints her mysterious and timeless images of flocks of birds, grey sky and shimmering endless horizons unmoored from specific times and places, then hand stitches over a background of Gampi paper—a soft, silky Japanese paper that has a satin-like sheen. These enigmatic photographic constructions document the implications of a moment rather than its actuality. The artist understands that her relationship to photography is complex: “I have this trouble of being a photographer but wanting to make the photographs into something else. I still think like a photographer even though in some ways I’m sabotaging the way that photography works. I still begin my artmaking process by making pictures. I don’t know how to begin without the photograph.” At play is the tension of a fixed medium documenting a world in movement.
Navarre has a BA, MA and MFA from Arizona State University. Her work is collected nationally and she has received a number of awards including a Capp Street Project Residency Grant in San Francisco for her collaboration with Jim Campbell...
