Carla Accardi Abstract Prints

Italian, 1924-2014
Already an artist, and among the most representative of the Italian Postwar period, she leaves Florence and arrives in Rome as the only woman of the group Forma 1. She defines herself as a white fly who has managed to follow her vocation “because someone believed in me and that was my father”. In Rome she meets Pietro Dorazio, Mino Guerrini, Achille Perilli and the younger Giulio Turcato. Occasionally, Severini went to Pietro Consagra’s studio (at that time he is a guest of Renato Guttuso in via Margutta 58) who appreciated the group’s works and defined Accardi’s works as full of verve. In 1947 the artist creates her first abstract painting, Scomposizioni (Decompositions) - a general theme for all the artists part of the group - in the Accardi’s artwork there are intersections of triangles. In the fifties there is her exhibition in Paris and Italy, where she meets the Turin gallery owner Luciano Pistoi, and in the seventies we see her political adhesion to feminism with her friend Carla Lonzi. Her art was born from the idea that figuration is a transmission of spirituality, to which she arrives with a personal journey marked by meetings with friends such as Consagra, Burri, Fontana. Among the biggest artists, at various times, she has loved Kandinskij or Klee, Mondrian or Matisse. In the artistic panorama of dualities, between figuration and abstraction, Carla Accardi chooses the Sign. Her work is based on the interaction between sign, surface, light, colour and transparency. The importance of her sign begins around 1952, when she isolates herself believing that she can no longer do anything in painting, and she starts to draw directly on the ground. She makes some signs. First, she uses white on black, then she starts to draw shapes one on the top of the other - this produces strong differentiated signs. On Accardi’s opinion, the sign is a vent of subconscious and artistic expression, and language too. A sign exists in relation to others, since it forms a structure with them. Its purpose is to represent the vital impulse that is in the world. In 1965 it takes place a real revolution in Carla Accardi’s artistic activity, when she starts using different materials. She gives up the physical setting of the painting by realizing her signs on sicofoil supports (transparent and shiny material used in the industrial field) with transparent paints. The idea of using sicofoil borns out of an interest in transparency - she wants to make her surroundings transparent and, therefore, she researches some colours that can adhere to, without detaching. She searches how to paint with them too. The process she uses is: to prepare sheets of paper where to draw and to pay attention to the combination and emanation of the light, that derives from the colours. The return to the rough canvas, as an inspiration of anti-painting, a desire for contradiction, this marks her last phase of artistic production.

Located in New York, NY
Alan Shields Alice in Grayland, 1979 Mixed media collage: Etching, aquatint, screen print with stitching and collage on hand made paper Hand signed, dated, titled and numbered 1/13 by Alan Shields on the front Unique variant This very unique and imaginative mixed media paper collage with stitching and fabric is floated and framed in a museum quality white wood frame with UV plexiglass. It is hand signed, dated, titled and numbered from the limited edition of 13 - but each is a unique variant. Frame included: Measurements: Frame: 27.75 x 22.5 x 2 inches Artwork: 23.5 x 18 inches Catalogue Raisonne: K. Tyler Tyler Graphics: Catalogue Raisonné, 1974-1985, New York: Abbeville Press, 1987. p. 289. Alan Shields came of age artistically in the late 1960s in New York. Expanding the boundaries of Minimalism, he became known as a master of aesthetic invention through his wide-ranging exploration of materials and techniques. His mixed media works often contain combinations of traditional silkscreen processes combined with found materials. New York Times critic Roberta Smith wrote in her 2005 obituary for the artist: "Mr. Shields's work combined expanses of gorgeous stained color, reminiscent of Helen Frankenthaler's canvases, with the humbler crafts and a Gypsy sense of portability." Critic Robert Hughes has described Shields as a brilliant bricoleur who could, and often did, make art out of just about anything. He became an innovative printmaker, experimenting with handmade paper and turning out editions in which each print was unique. After his passing, Shields was awarded a Judith Rothschild Foundation grant given to recently deceased abstract artists whose work is of the highest quality but merits further recognition. About Alan Shields: Alan Shields (b. 1944, Herington, KS; d. 2005, Shelter Island, NY) created unique, imaginative, and theatrical structures using unconventional materials and vibrant color. His three-dimensional paintings convey a playful, deconstructive impulse through the incorporation of un-stretched hand-dyed canvas, rope, yarn, beads, and wood. Shields moved to New York City in 1968, where he showed with Paula Cooper...

Maeght, Paris Printed by Mourlot, Paris Edition 3000 (There was also a signed edition of 75 on larger paper) Catalogue raisonné: Subsequent to Schmücking Condition: Excellent Image/Sheet size: 12 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches "Hans Hartung B. 1904, LEIPZIG, GERMANY; D. 1989, ANTIBES, FRANCE Hans Hartung was born on September 21, 1904, in Leipzig, Germany. He cultivated interests in philosophy, astronomy, music, and religion at a young age before he turned to painting. Early in his career he found inspiration in the works of Rembrandt van Rijn and Francisco de Goya, and later influences included Lovis Corinth, Oskar Kokoschka, Emil Nolde, and Max Slevogt. At just 17, Hartung began to experiment with abstraction, synthesizing the graphic techniques of his artistic models while completely eliminating figurative elements. Hartung entered the Universität Leipzig in 1924 to study philosophy and art history but left to concentrate on painting at the Kunstakademie, Leipzig. While Hartung was advised to pursue further training at the Bauhaus, he opted to study at the Kunstakademie, Dresden. In 1926 Hartung saw an exhibition of international art in Dresden, which exposed him to Cubism and other modern styles that had emerged in France. His encounters with works by Georges Braque, Juan Gris, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso, along with various travels abroad, encouraged him to move to Paris in 1926, where he spent the majority of his time until 1932, although he passed the summer of 1928 in Munich studying under artist and theorist Max Dörner. In 1929 Hartung married the Norwegian painter Anna-Eva Bergman. After several years abroad, they tried to reestablish themselves in Berlin in 1935 but were soon forced into exile by the National Socialist regime. In the years leading up to World War II, Hartung's work reflected his attempts to reconcile chance and control, combining expressive graphic elements with patches of black and color to produce a sense of spontaneity. After the outbreak of the war, Hartung served in the Foreign Legion (1939–40), and later in the Free French (1943–44). He was gravely wounded at the German Front, and one of his legs was amputated. In 1945 he returned to Paris and resumed painting and the following year earned French citizenship. Hartung was a major figure in Art Informel and Tachisme (from the French tache, meaning blot or stain). While Hartung's postwar paintings are generally described as exhibiting a calligraphic quality, his work moved through a series of phases, becoming less spontaneous and more formally aggressive than his work from the late 1930s. In many works of the late 1940s and early 1950s, such as T-50 Painting 8 (T-50 peinture 8, 1950), he applied large areas of color to the canvas on which he painted a combination of bold black brushstrokes and thinner frenetic linear strokes. Hartung received several international awards, including the 1956 award for the Europe-Africa section at the Guggenheim International Award and the International Grand Prize for painting at the 1960 Venice Biennale. His first major group show was organized by curator and critic Christian Zervos at the Jeu de Paume, Paris (1937). After settling permanently in Paris, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Surindépendants (1935, 1937, 1945). His first solo show took place at Galerie Lydia...
