Monumental Majolica Houdan Hen & Chick Vase Choisy Le Roi by Paul Comolera
By Paul Comolera
Located in Austin, TX
Spectacular Majolica mottled Houdan hen with his chick vase signed Paul Comolera for the manufacture of Choisy le roi, circa 1875. The houdan hen feed his chick with a worm, a branch with leaves is on the base with blackberries, on the back of the hen a large vase with leaves. An incredible example of the Naturalism of the 19th century. This piece is very unusual by the color. The poule de Houdan is an old French breed of domestic chicken named by her origin the commune of Houdan near Paris, this hens are all usually mottled black and white like this one. It's very possible it's an early example of the production or a special order because all the others hens know on the market are white. At the end of 19th century, Choisy le roi was one of the most important ceramics...

Bisque "Enfant Écrivant" After Charles-Gabriel Sauvage, Called Lemire
By Choisy-le-Roi, Charles G. Lemire
Located in Paris, FR
Statuette in?porcelain?biscuit featuring a child who is seated and writing or drawing. This piece was manufactured in Choisy-le-Roi after a model created around 1795 by Charles-Gabriel Sauvage, also called Lemire. The sculpture is a symbol of Study, and is part of the Neoclassic trend that was part of the Napoleonic Empire period. The precision of its details, especially of the hair, lend to its distinctive quality. Apocryphal signature on the base: Canova. Mark from the Chosiy-le-Roi production center. A bronze that is nearly identical to our statue, also after Charles-Gabriel Sauvage (Lemire) (1741-1827), is conserved at the Louvre museum in Paris along with its counterpart, Enfant Lisant (Child Reading). Even before the discovery of these bronzes by the Louvre, these pieces were known thanks to the biscuit copies made by Dihl et Guérhard...
