French

Denis Piel was born in France in 1944 and raised in Australia. Piel opened his first photography studio in Australia in 1966 and the 70s, moved to Europe for assignments with Elle, Marie Claire, Votre Beaute, as well as numerous magazines in the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy. A 1979 assignment for The New York Times magazine caught the eye of Conde Nast editorial director, Alexander Liberman, who hired Piel for American Vogue, which led to an exclusive contract with Conde Nast. He spent the next decade creating the groundbreaking fashion and advertising images and generated many of the decade’s most iconic photographs for magazines like Vogue, GQ, Vanity Fair and Self. Piel was awarded the Leica Medal of Excellence for Commercial Photography in 1987. Piel now lives in the rural southwest of France. Piel is a member of the Experiments in Art and Technology. He founded Jupiter Films in 1985 and wrote and directed numerous award-winning commercials. Piel directed his first feature-length documentary, Love is Blind, in the early 1990s. Piel has exhibited at the ROVE Exhibition in London, England; Galerie Pinxit, Toulouse, France; Staley-Wise Gallery, New York; Musée du Point de Vue, Brussels, Belgium; Musée départemental du Textile, a Labastide Rouairoux, France; Museu Nacional do Traje e da Moda, Lisbon, Portugal; Alliance Française de Sydney, Australia; International Centre of Photography School, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England; The Mint Museum, North Carolina, among others. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, as well as numerous private collections such as the BES photo collection and António de Sommer Champalimaud collection.

David Byrne, Los Angeles, 1986 Signed, Framed, ChromaLuxe aluminium Print
By Annie Leibovitz
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Art Edition “David Byrne” (No. 1–275). Hardcover volume in a slipcase, accompanied by the portrait David Byrne, Los Angeles, 1986. For over 50 years, Annie Leibovitz has been creating a body of work that is unequaled in breadth and influence. From the viscerally immediate reportage made for Rolling Stone magazine in the 1970s and extending through the more stylized portraiture of her work for Vanity Fair and Vogue, her pictures make up what is essentially a family album of our time. In 2014, in close collaboration with Annie, TASCHEN published a SUMO edition of her work: over 200 photographs, many of them famous (the naked John Lennon entwined in a last embrace with Yoko Ono, Patti Smith on fire) and some rarely, if ever, seen before. In 2022, to accommodate a wider audience, this volume was recreated as an unlimited XXL edition. The XXL volume is now available as an Art Edition in four different versions, each accompanied by a signed, numbered and framed dye-sublimation ChromaLuxe aluminum print. David Byrne, Los Angeles, 1986 is included in an edition of 275 copies. In 1986, David Byrne wrote, directed and starred in his only feature film, True Stories. It was a quirky view of life in small-town rural Texas. Several of his collaborators on the project were from the downtown New York performing-arts world. Music was an integral element in the film and much of it was supplied by Byrne’s band, the Talking Heads...

Naomi Campbell and Viv Westwood colour 35 x 24 limited edition print
Located in Norwich, GB
David Koppel served his photographic apprenticeship in the rough-and-tumble world of the Fleet Street paparazzi in 1980’s London when his skills captured the very essence of the Me Decade that gave birth to the celebrity culture of today. Koppel’s classic photographs of Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton & the Royal Family appeared in every major newspaper and magazine and marked him out as that rarity amongst press photographers: the artist with a camera. Building on the reputation gained through the photographs for the book Still Waters, his black-and-white portraits of ordinary people now rank among the many famous names in his portfolio. Koppel also went one better and in 2002 bought the St Giles St Gallery , bringing the best of local and international contemporary art and photography to Norwich, including the works of Sir Peter Blake, Terry O’Neill, David Bailey, Maggie Hambling, Storm Thorgersson, Tim Woolcock...
