A Barr, Flight, Barr, Worcester Crested Dish
By Flight, Barr & Barr Worcester
Located in Katonah, NY
A Barr,Flight,Barr, Worcester dish with crest and motto MEDIO TUTISSIMUS IBIS," surrounded by a kaleidoscopic design of pink, green, and white leaves on an orange ground. The crest as shown in grisalle on upon this George III Porcelain Dish by Barr, Flight and Barr Worcester circa 1804 - 1813 pertains we believe to the family of Busfield or its variant spelling of Busfeild. It may be blazoned as follows: Crest: A cubit arm in armour erect proper holding in the hand a hawk’s lure Motto: Medio tutissimus ibis [The middle path is safest] This crest with its arm in armour together its accompanying motto as mentioned above reflects the crest as used by the family of Busfield who settled in Leeds in the County of Yorkshire at some time before 1613. It would appear that the family may well have used armorial bearings without authority for one source states that it used as its crest ‘an arm in armour erect proper holding in the hand a fleur-de-lys or.’ This crest is said to have been used by the Busfields, of Upwood in the same county who were descendants of the earlier Busfields, of Leeds, although in 1886, Lieutenant Colonel William Busfield, of Upwood appears to have regularised his armorial bearings by acquiring a grant of arms...
