Frank W. Benson More Prints

American, 1862-1951

Frank Weston Benson, well known for his American Impressionist paintings, also produced an incredible body of prints — etchings, drypoints and a few lithographs. Born and raised on the North Shore of Massachusetts, Benson, a natural outdoorsman, grew up sailing, fishing, and hunting. From a young age, he was fascinated with drawing and birding — this keen interest continued throughout his life. His first art instruction was with Otto Grundman, at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and then in 1883 in Paris at the Académie Julian, where he studied the rigorous “École des Beaux-Arts”’ approach to drawing and painting for two years.

During the early 1880s, Seymour Haden visited Boston, giving a series of lectures on etching. This introduction to the European etching revival inspired Benson. He purchased a copy of Maxime Lalanne’s “A Treatise on Etching” and used it as a guide into the nuances of the craft. Benson's first etching was done in 1882. Titled “Salem Harbor,” it was published in “The Art Student,” the school magazine at the Museum of Fine Arts. Almost three decades would pass before Benson’s busy schedule allowed his fascination with etching and dry-point to weave its way back into the daily structure of his life. He produced over 350 different prints before his death in 1951. In a letter to his grandson, Frank Benson noted, “I have been happy because my hobby and my work are one and the same, and if you can arrange the same thing in your life, you will be equally happy.”

Remember Belgium Buy Bonds Fourth Liberty Loan original WW1 vintage poster

Original vintage poster”. Remember Belgium, Buy Bonds Fourth Liberty Loan. Mounted on acid free archival linen. Ready to frame. Over 100 years old! This original World War 1 poste presents well, but the fold marks have been restored during the linen backing process. The occupation of Belgium was a major propaganda theme of the First World War. There were horror stories of how the civilian population was treated and, true or not, they became fodder for the persuasion machine that was created to stir up the populace for a variety of causes, most having to do with raising money via bond issues. This especially powerful and frightening image, was created by Ellsworth Young...

View of Emden, Germany: A 16th Century Hand-colored Map by Braun & Hogenberg
By Franz Hogenberg
Located in Alamo, CA
This is a 16th century original hand-colored copperplate engraved map of a bird's-eye View of Embden, Germany entitled " Emuda, vulgo Embden vrbs Frisia orientalis primaria" by Georg Braun & Franz Hogenberg, in volume II of their famous city atlas "Civitates Orbis Terrarum", published in Cologne, Germany in 1575. This is a beautifully colored and detailed map of Emden, a seaport in northwestern Germany, along the Ems River and perhaps portions of over Dollart Bay, near the border with the Netherland. The map depicts a bird's-eye view of the city from the southwest, as well as a view of the harbor and an extensive system of canals. Numerous ships of various sizes, as well as two rowboats containing numerous occupants are seen in the main waterway in the foreground and additional boats line two canals in the center of the city. Two men and two women are shown on a hill in the foreground on the right, dressed in the 16th century style of nobility. Two ornate crests are included in each corner. A title strap-work cartouche is in the upper center with the title in Latin. The crest on the right including Engelke up de Muer (The Little Angel on the Wall) was granted by Emperor Maximilian I in 1495. This is an English translation of an excerpt of Braun's description of Embden: "In Emden, the capital of East Frisia, rich merchants live in very fine houses. The city has a broad and well-situated harbour, which in my opinion is unique in Holland. Frisia and the whole of the Netherlands, for the ships can anchor here right under the city walls. They have also extended the harbour as far as the New Town, so that up to 400 ships can now find shelter here when the sea is rough." The emphasis on the harbor and waterways within the city highlights the importance of Emden's place as a seaport at this time. Embden developed from a Dutch/Flemish trading settlement in the 7th-8th centuries into a city as late as late 14th century. In 1494 it was granted staple rights, and in 1536 the harbour was extended. In the mid-16th century Emden's port was thought to have the most ships in Europe. Its population then was about 5,000, rising to 15,000 by the end of the 16th century. The Ems River flowed directly under the city walls, but its course was changed in the 17th century by the construction of a canal. Emden has canals within its city limits, a typical feature of Dutch towns, which also enabled the extension of the harbor. In 1744 Emden was annexed by Prussia and is now part of Germany. It was captured by French forces in 1757 during the Seven Years' War, but recaptured by Anglo-German forces in 1758. During the Napoleonic French era, Emden and the surrounding lands of East Frisia were part of the short-lived Kingdom of Holland. Restaurant in Mott Street
By Charles Frederick William Mielatz
Located in New Orleans, LA
The image depicts a restaurant on New York's Mott Street with ornamental iron work on the balconies. There are six figures in the scene in various stages of contrast. Mott Street is considered the unofficial Main Street of New York's Chinatown. Ella Fitzgerald sang it best: “And tell me what street compares with Mott Street in July? Sweet pushcarts gently gliding by.” CFW Mielatz was an early influence on the drypoints and etchings of Martin Lewis. This piece was created in 1906 and it is signed in pencil. It is part of the collection of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art C.F.W. Mielatz American, 1860-1919 Born in Bredding, Germany in 1864, Mielatz emigrated to the United States as a young boy and studied at the Chicago School of Design. Mostly self-taught, his first prints were large New England landscapes reminiscent of the painter-etcher school of American Art. Around 1890 he started to produce prints of New York City and by the time of his death, the number totaled over ninety images. He was a master technician in the field of etching, reworking many of his plates to get the exact feeling he was seeking. Mielatz was a member of the New York Etching...
