A very colorful oil on canvas painting by Peter Todd Mitchell. Bouquet of flowers with a surrealist Medusa image. About the artist: Born: 1924 - New York City Died: 1988 - Sitges, Spain Known for: Abstract and representational urban view painting, wallpaper design He was a very talented painter and writer in Europe and the United States. Mitchell exhibited at such famous galleries as the Hanover Gallery in London and the Carstairs Gallery in New York City. For many years he supplemented his income as a painter by creating textile and wallpaper designs. Mitchell's early years were spent in the company of the fashionable and famous surrounding his beautiful playwright mother, who was twice married to the great impressario Leon Leonidoff, Senior Producer of the Radio City Music Hall. His travels with them and his associations at an early age with a theatrical and literary crowd gave him a taste for the exotic. He died suddenly in Sitges, a small town south of Barcelona, in 1988. PRESENTING a simply beautiful, monumental and imposing original work of contemporary art, namely, a Triptych oil on canvas panels of New Orleans Colonial/French Quarter Houses. Unsigned and undated, but most definitely inspired by the World Renowned New Orleans artist, James Michalopoulos. These were not painted by Michalopoulos, but were clearly inspired by him and his famous depictions of ‘wavey’ New Orleans houses. Also, they were created and painted in New Orleans, contemporaneously to when Michalopoulos was starting to become recognized, in the New Orleans (and greater) artworld. The 3 panels work perfectly together as a visual feast and ‘connected’ work of art. The panel on the left features a wavy blue, grey and yellow, French Quarter style 2 Story Wooden house, complete with Corinthian Style Columns, decks, railings, storm shuttered windows, etc. It has a deep blue sky with shimmering light reflections. The garden to the front, has steps leading to the house and has shrubs and flowers, that are continued into the 2nd or middle/center panel. The middle or center panel incorporates the other side of the garden plants etc for continuity and it features a single story pink, yellow and white wavy French Quarter style house, with fabulous decor and complete with decks, railings, storm shuttered windows, etc. It has a deep blue sky with shimmering light reflections and a white moon, emitting swirling patterns of light. Excellent example of a large oil on canvas abstraction by Fred Hocks from 1957. This painting was included in the 1976 retrospective at the Fine Arts Gallery in San Diego which later became the San Diego Museum of Art. No painter embodies San Diego’s early avant-garde more than Fred (Ferdinand) Hocks, a German-born painter who began visiting San Diego in the late 1920s after studies at the California School of Fine Art in San Francisco and the Art Students League in New York. Fellow painter Dan Dickey credited Hocks in 1947 with “opening up pathways for future, more enlightened generations (of artists),” and predicted that Fred Hocks would be “esteemed a master.” During the post-war years Hocks was assistant director of the San Diego School of Arts and Crafts, a private art school in La Jolla, and was instrumental in keeping affordable artist’s studios in Spanish Village. Along with modern architect Lloyd Ruocco, Fred Hocks co-founded the dynamic Allied Artists Council with Belle Baranceanu, Everett Gee Jackson, Dan Dickey and John Olsen. The well-travelled Hocks exhibited in San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Pasadena, Paris, Mallorca and Guadalajara, had several one-person shows at the Art Center La Jolla/La Jolla Museum of Art and at the Fine Arts Gallery (SDMA). The San Diego Museum of Art held a major retrospective of his painting in 1976, just a few years before his death. He brought a continental element to the local art scene and is described in Bruce Kamerling’s 100 Years of Art in San Diego as “one of the most adventurous local artists…an intelligent and articulate defender of modern tendencies in art.” Local arts and architecture writer James Britton called Fred Hocks “the dean of the San Diego moderns...

Title: Hiding in The Jungle Artist: Yang Qian (Chinese; B. 1959) Medium: Oil on canvas Years: purchased circa 1990 A Palm Beach, FL collection An early work by Yang Qian during his sojourn in Florida, USA. The series delved into art history with reinterpretation and overlaying symbolism. The painting is set in a moody tropical jungle at night and is a clear reinterpretation and a dialogue between Henri Rousseau's The Dream and Paul Gauguin's La Femme du Roi. Although the two French artists were contemporaries, they may have not intersected in their personal lives. Pioneering and ground-breaking for their time, their work were celebrated posthumously and served as inspiration for later artists.
